I'm all for taking down the flags and stuff. You should cheer for good people regardless of where they come from.

I mean they're representing China for more sponsorships and money that their own country they live in maybe falls short on. That sounds very capitalistic to me. Sounds like an American making the most of their name and looking out for their own best self interest. How is that not American?

It doesn't matter if they are representing them for sponsorships and money - I would argue representing the CCP for money is WORSE than representing them for political reasons.

Also, America isn't all "looking out for their own best interest", if it was we wouldn't have people make sacrifices.

If Gu is comfortable selling out her values for money, that is her right. I suspect when it is all said and done she will end up living in the USA again and not the CCP China..... and I hope when she does return people constantly remind her that she supported an oppressive regime and that she has no real principles.

If she does really like the CCP, then I hope she has a long and happy life in China. People should be free to live where they want to live.

Do you feel the same about American companies making their profits off Chinese slave labor workers in factories working in horrible conditions for pennies?

I think there's a distinct difference between an individual athlete in a very limited window of time that's able to make the most money out of their opportunity to be known in the public platform and a multibillion dollar business. I don't even know the athlete we're talking about specifically in this case. That's how little I've kept up with the Olympics this year. I typically don't care. I just think if you're an athlete that is good enough to compete for any national team and one nation is offering you more money to represent them, it seems very American and capitalistic for them to choose the country that provides greater benefits. That's all I'm saying. I totally get China sucks. I'm with ya there. But I can't fault an athlete who's maybe going to be famous for who knows how long? It's not the same thing as a business that is planning 10 to 15 to 20 years into the future ya know?

You are only in your physical prime for so long and maybe your athleticism is best suited to a niche sport that isn't going to pull into multi-million dollar contracts on the regular like the big 3 sports in the U.S. Understanding that, if I were in that athlete's position, it would be incredibly difficult for me to turn down more money, popularity, the women as a result of being a bigger celebrity, the social connections; All of that and more, just because some people on a BBS are upset over it for politically expedient reasons the athlete themselves took no part in. You're asking someone to give all that up because f*ck China. OK. That's a tall expectation to hold of someone who is likely just trying to make the most out of their opportunity is all I'm saying.

The attitude of most of you guys in here is rather disturbing and predictable. We are in a big mess now is because of these CCP bastards. China is at war with us, you guys may not think it is but China seems to think so. They will exploit every weakness that we have and trying to corrupt us with their dirty money, it does not seem too hard for them at the moment judging by you guys’ attitude. These immoral dimwits Olympians as well others will soon find out the nasty true colors of the CCP.

It's hard not to these days. Even American products have parts made in China. Anyway, we're beating a dead horse now. You have your opinion and I have mine.

Like I told bobrek, we're beating a dead horse at this point. You are entitled to your own opinion. No sense debating it. We differ in opinions.

Agreed. However, it's an odd argument to make asking about Chinese products, when most everyone's house has a number of products that are manufactured in China. So..my suggestion is to not make that argument unless you're one of the incredibly rare individuals who doesn't own and continue to buy products made in China.

Whenever I see that type of comment on Facebook or some other site, it is invariably being made on an iPhone.

It was a response to that other guy saying it's fine to pursue more money in China.

Right....but we all contribute to that and it's hypocritical to call out someone when we participate ourselves.

This has been happening a long time - where people represent countries they do not live in. So why does it change things now such that the flags are meaningless because of this one instance but it never before was a problem?

Why is it she is representing the CCP and not China? Is China the CCP? Is America Trump or Joe Biden?

I swear deb4rockets, if there were a cure for TDS, I would walk a thousand miles to get it for you. You seemed to be losing your mind anytime the name of the Orange man comes up, but every now and then, you have lucid moments such as this thread where I agree with you that these bush league Olympians selling America out for dirty CCP money.

    lord..

she's doing this for the money. like 30 million dollars.

'I'm inspiring young chinese girls' is just marketing because none of them live in California and have beauty product deals for 30 million dollars.
    she's attending Stanford
that sure doesn't sound like she's going to hang out where Yao was studying.
