I can't remember if I saw Tonal or Mirror first, but when I first saw the commercial I kind of laughed. To me, it's kind of like a Peleton. It looks like glorified exercise equipment that you pay too much for. The exercises you can do are kind of limited, and you're trying to tell me you can't just go get some relatively cheap weights or equipment that do the same thing? If you need someone to talk you through it, go find a video online. I don't know. I just don't see the appeal in paying that much money initially only to continue paying monthly afterwards.
I lift 4-5 days a week. Tonal is actually a lot more functional than that. In theory. It's expensive as all get out, but cheaper than building a full out home gym, which I'd love to do. I don't necessarily need the instruction, but the workouts are nice. It basically replaces free weights, and they say you can do 1700+ exercises with it. The beauty of it is in the electromagnet. You can do burnouts, it can technically "spot" you. It can vary the weight as you are completing your lift. It can also keep the resistance equal throughout the lift. I'm probably saying that weird. Basically, the magnets enable it to do a lot more than traditional free weights, which I use often. The stats it keeps are also intriguing to me. It's just expensive like $4-4.5k. And I think the technology will advance more and more in the coming next couple of years. And it'll get cheaper. It's intriguing to me, though.
I really didn’t know about it until you posted here. I thought it was just a ‘smart’ mirror. So I took a look. Looks like it has amazing utility for the footprint. The cost is pretty high compared to building a home gym, not to mention when you add in a $50/mo subscription. Pros: Tiny footprint Smart workouts Cable weight Work out at home Cons: Cost vs other workout routes Only goes to 200lbs Only cables The fact that it’s adaptive and will check your form is pretty awesome. But it’s nothing a mirror, recording your workout for review and experience can’t do. I understand that this is coming from experience so I see the upside for newbies or time strapped people. Working out at home has its pros and cons vs a gym membership. The cons are (potentially) less equipment, no gym eye candy, no group motivation and no socializing. The pros are more focus, no other people’s bodily fluids, no other people. You can also work out at home nude, fart as loud as you want, blast your own music, etc. I’m not sure of the resale-ability of the device since they require professional installation. I say if it’s in your budget and fits your lifestyle, do it.
The ladies get the ‘Penal’ upgrade where Tonal presents a **** (or dildo if you will). Tonal can then increase the length and girth during a ‘session’ among other stimuli. The man then goes to a place called ‘Carousel’ where he floats and is destroyed by a laser as the woman no longer needs him. ‘Penal’ mode also ends with an ejaculate and presents cab fare in change (just like the shake weight for ladies on South Park). This will lead to a domed Utopian society for ladies and men will become extinct with women reproduced in labs by talking societal computers with big diamond-like lights. It’s really quite innovative. Similar to “Logan’s Run” but is instead called “Matilda’s Fun”.
