The COVID advisory boards Riley is referencing recommended masking in elementary schools during Omicron. We're talking about recent months, not the beginning of the pandemic. Are you saying they were unreasonable to recommend these precautions during this time?

ATW - I haven’t read all your posts to pretend I know your view fully, but at least it seems like you’re not the mojo man/general thade/gioan Baptist type. It is that view and expression of view that is truly problematic in this country. People can, do and should have thoughts and opinions about things like masks on kids, whether it’s effective, cost benefit of it. Especially if you’re not just a casual observer from the sidelines or just a political ranter. Your own kids are living it. Mine are older mid/late teens and social engagement is enormously important. As any parent with critical thinking skills would say, there are no easy answers with Covid.

But back to the issue at hand… the drop in omicron supports mask optional at schools, period. In this circumstance, it’s the right call IMO.

My own workplace is having us return to office 3 days a week starting next week. It was scheduled to happen on Jan 3, but Omicron. So smart people assess the situation and adjust. Because of the data. Not because they are evil psychopath Dems who are bent on controlling lives, eating children, engaged in a Pedophile sex ring, or whatever the hell else @MojoMan and @Gioan Baotixita want to say. It’s the data.

    Good discussion.

    I agree with this viewpoint.

I couldn’t read the full article bc paywall, but the premise in the blurb provided is focused on the trade off between omicron spread versus a potentially deadlier variant if omicron is suppressed and allowed to mutate. I’ve seen various iterations of that debate and it’s a real discussion. But as with most things, people are predisposed to dealing with the threat in front of them than a theoretical or potential subsequent threat.

Got it. So in your worldview COVID advisory boards, comprised of the best pediatric doctors and scientists in Houston, advising the city's top private schools, are part of the "Left" that are abusing and failing children.

No, but they are wrong. There is an element of groupthink in certain circles. And obviously, nobody wants to be blamed for deaths, so it will always be more convenient to promote "measures". Much more to lose by promoting fewer restrictions. And if you were completely wrong by promoting unnecessary measures, you can still claim they worked. Prevention paradoxon, blabla.

Takes more guts to do what Anders Tegnell did.

Show me data that areas with mask mandates in schools have lower Covid hospitalization rates and higher mortality than those without.

There are different studies allowing for different variables. That being said, I understand that no one study allowed for all of the variables. That goes in both directions. I think people will lean to the studies that back their particular views.

But I do like reading about or hearing about the criticism and possible flaws regarding the studies.

So these COVID advisory boards are not abusing and failing children?

When it comes to unwarranted and overreaching mask mandates even for toddlers, yes, it is my observation that these largely come from the left.

Biden's administration enacted the mask mandate for 2 year olds on planes. I may be wrong, but I don't think that came from Trump's government. It hasn't done anything to lower the numbers. In fact, they went higher than ever, despite these rules, and despite vaccinations.

De Santis, on the other hand, has been against Covid passports and mask mandates. I know first hand that these decisions were data-driven.

On this topic, I think the Republicans got it right more often than the Democrats.

Hochul is just as bad as Cuomo. Very disappointing for folks who thought she would be a refreshing change
