Didn't really need to throw in the "my haters aren't going to win the Olympics so HA " line. Seems unnecessary as LeBron, like 10 years ago, saying how his haters have to wake up to their 'crappy' lives tomorrow while he wakes up as LeBron James. I get that she's 18 and 18 year olds shouldn't have to deal with international issues like this, but with all the pomp and circumstance that comes with being in the Olympic spotlight, you really couldn't undergo some media training? Come on. If some questions were out of left field, I get being blindsided and reacting in the moment. But she had to know these questions were coming.

So, China was touting up Gu as the best thing since sliced bread. Then, she posts a response to a Chinese user about how "anyone can download a vpn its literally free from the App Store" to get around China's restrictive Internet. Now, she is being villainized by many in China because they don't have that freedom and its illegal to use a vpn. Is she going to get the Houston Rockets treatment now? Shouldn't China remove her from all the billboards and commercials now? Why is China celebrating an American representing China because her mother is Chinese even though she lives in America and has all those freedoms? Is it to make it out that an American citizen doesn't want to represent America but would rather represent China? It seems political.
Almost any middle class Chinese knows to use VPN if they want more info, it's just kept on the DL because the CPP is an oppressive tyrant. The flak she's getting are from CCP plants or brown nosing snitch haters. I don't think she's canceled but they'll try to beat her down for small gaffs because they ultimately view her as an outsider. They just want her to assimilate (STFU/follow orders) and serve as a prop to how great they are. Which isn't a bad deal for many if you rake in an extra 10-30 million a year.
She's doing the most American thing , getting the most money and status no matter what. Compare her that Chinese Tennis Star who had to give it up to some 70 year old communist politician for 'her country'. @Jontro
