this gonna come back to bite me in the ass for sure... but i think folks are overrating Halliburton right now. Or underrating Sabonis. Trade seems fair to me.
Nah, we all have our opinions. It's the ones who are think they are 100% correct 100% of the time and are disrespectful to those who disagree that deserves the flames
Dear Stone: a foundation built on Green, KPJ and Wood is highly questionable. Please use the deadline wisely and don’t let your ego get in the way of walking back a previous error.
I don't understand where this narrative of Sabonis is a negative on DEF comes from ..? He has over 15 career DWS in 6 seasons, so nearly 3 per season, vs 18+ OWS He is nearly as valuable on DEF as on OFF He has also ranked among the top 20 in the league in other advanced DEF metrics multiple times
I I do think it's a little of both. I think the bigger shock (according to the narrative) was that Haliburton was the Kings' "best" player. And/or they sold short. I actually think this turns out more like how Charlotte sort of won the off season a couple of years ago as they got clowned for Rozier, letting Walker walk and Haywood, along with the Ball draft pick which was seen as risky. Not saying it will work out for the Kings, but I think it helps to build a discernible core around Fox and Sabonis. So it should actually result in winning more as they have a great big in Sabonis, the best they've had since Cousins. Obviously they haven't had much draft luck (or competence), so I get why they made the decision they did. The writing had been on the wall that Fox & Haliburton might not have been able to play well together so this trade does clarify things at least. I don't know that they'll be able to get any big free agent signings, but that doesn't change much if this trade wasn't made.
actual defense in reality, doesn't come down to numbers that's why you don't understand it sabonis isn't a two way player. never has been. A big who offers 0 rim protection
Yeah, its definitely questionable how much Sabonis helps win games vs just put up stats... but he's incredibly good, 2x all star, and still very young, and his game isn't one that seems to just be empty stats. He's MEANINGFULLY better than CWood for example. It's still problematic for Kings that Fox can't d up, and Sabonis isn't great on d, and they lost 2 of their better distance shooters. But I absolutely understand the move from the Kings perspective.
The Sloan Analytics Conference at MIT would beg to differ, as would every global industry which is now at least partially driven/explained/predicted by data-driven analytics Defensive basketball is not some mythical, ethereal dark art that cannot be measured or compared
nope. defense isn't measured by actual numbers. that's for folks who actually don't understand what playing good defense actually is on the floor. and most folks don't.
Umm ... OK Why don't you name your top 10 NBA defenders, now or ever, that you've witnessed 'on the floor' ... I'll check any see if there's any correlation between your list and DEF metric leaders, today or historically Do you actually think it was random conicidence that Correa ascended to become the best DEF SS in baseball at the exact same point the metrics show he did? Luhnow and Morey both ran successful pro franchises by reconciling analytics with old-school scouting reports Did you by chance ever work for Angelos' Orioles?
I have no idea what any of this has to do with Sabonis who isn't a good at defense there's no such thing as finding some number that says someone plays good defense and someone scores anyway. And the same goes for someone who jacks up a bad shot and misses, while the defender doesn't even play respectable defense that's the problem with analytics and folks who think its the answer to everything. it doesn't mean anything if you don't understand what actually happening on the floor
That's why I asked you for your great defenders list ... I was trying to illustrate how numbers (DWS, etc) can correlate/confirm the results of the eyeball test (your personal 'understanding of what's happening') Neither is as valuable independently as they are in combination Perhaps you aren't recognizing the subtle nuance of Sabonis' DEF impact
I could see Halliburton being a really great guard but not a star or superstar. Although, I feel like right now this favors Pacers.
