You’re on the right path. I have no insider knowledge but I have a feeling that if he gets moved to the right market he will opt out of next year and sign a 2-3 year deal where he makes more overall than he would have. I think that’s what his camp is discussing behind closed doors.

I don't know whether a team would sign him for more than 45M over 3 years. My guess is, if he shows that he can still be productive (not necessarily at star level but a solid rotation guy), he can easily get a 2-year 25M deal. I assume that 25M would be more than he needed to give up on a buyout.

So is he willing to give up like 20M in a buyout, sign a min contract for the rest of the season, prove himself, and get a reasonably good deal to recoup or even exceed his loss?

I would still claw myself through those negotiations and my limit would be 14-15 mill loss.

Let's be real one second, he is at best the 3rd guy on a stacked team....if they haven't gotten a ball handler/facilitator already.

His inability to shoot many 3s is still a flaw, he should be better equipped than Westbrook.

He would not be making that kind of money ever again.

From what I see how Wall played last season and how Westbrook plays this season, Wall would definitely be an upgrade over Westbrook for the Lakers. Wall doesn't have to be turned into a spot up shooter even if he plays with LeBron. True, he won't be having the ball in his hand all the time like he used to, but he will have his share of creating offense on his terms. He's not an elite shooter by any stretch. But at least he's not Westbrook kind of bad shooter, and he doesn't make head-scratching dumb turnovers. He is also a better defender than Westbrook.

I know we are being serious here but if you hear the 3 names that the Rockets had.

    Boogie, Westbrook, Wall.

Those are players to avoid if you could, or as you put, minimum deals.

I wouldn't bet on any of them, and if he was forced to come off the bench, it took a lot of time for Melo getting used to and wasn't fun.

I feel like supporters of this argument are forgetting a few important points...
    • His contract might have the team pay him that much, but after taxes, agent fees, and bills, how much did he actually end up with?
    • Professional entertainers / athletes are notorious for spending a crap ton of money on things that can only be considered poor investments, especially superstars. That's why so many of them are broke just a few years into retirement. For every former player that was smart about managing their money, you have a hundred that are the exact opposite.
Now, I am not saying Wall is a frivolous spender. What I am saying is that none of us know what his financial situation and prospects actually are, so why the hell are some of you so eager to just assume it's easy for him (for anyone) to just throw out tens of millions like it doesn't matter?

Russ was benched again and booed last night by the home crowd. The lake show has to be seriously considering ways to shake things up. They should have lost to the Knicks last night. They’ve got to be pushing the panic button.

I know it’s still a long shot, but I don’t think the Wall for Russ trade is off the table. Its the only way out of their Russ conundrum for LA.

Buyouts don’t do anything for the Rockets but save Tillman money. We don’t get any cap room. All we get is a roster spot. I say hang on to Wall until his contract is up or until someone next year gives you expirings and any positive asset for him.

    You can get cap relief

Depends on the buyout. But worst case the buyout is for the exact dollar amount of the contract. If the player signs elsewhere, every $ there is relief.
If the buyout is less than full $ then there is relief.

If the player won't take less than full $, then they might just get benched for a full year - or until willing to take less....

Given the Lakers’ struggles, the continued benching of Russ, the threat of wasting another of Bron’s precious years, the possibility of a Russ for Wall swap can’t be overlooked. LA is so limited with what they can actually do to make the team measurably better.

On a vet min deal I’m sure there will be at least 10 teams calling him to sign.

How many will offer him an unconditional starting lineup spot though??? Maybe 2 or 3. I assume that’s the only reason the Rockets got Melo a few years back and the reason it went sour when they had to bring him off the bench.

I think he’s going to be in a similar boat where he signs with a team, initially starts, sucks, goes to the bench as a 6th man, doesn’t have a team who will sign him to start the year, and signs around the mid point next year after being severely humbled and working on his jumper.

As long as that team isn't the Rockets, I'm good.
