So funny to listen to talk radio. 790 convinced that the plan was the hire Josh McDaniels and they got screwed 619 is McCown
https://theathletic.com/3100531/202...x-and-a-packers-problem-mike-sandos-pick-six/ Houston Texans: Lovie Smith? This one wasn’t yet official Sunday night. Can it be? Forgive the cynicism here, but it felt like the Texans wanted to hire Josh McCown but could not justify it in the current climate; weren’t realistically going to hire Flores, who would be difficult to push around and happens to be suing the league at the moment; and then turned to a more accomplished placeholder than David Culley. Is McCown the Texans’ coach in waiting?
Nobody is debating that. But operating expenses/budgets are cultivated based on historical revenue. The Texans have always been able to count on being in the top quarter of all NFL teams in terms of franchise value, ratings, revenue, season ticket waiting list/renewals, etc ever since the franchise was awarded. That sort of revenue also elevates the status of the owner/front office in the circles of NFL influence, whether it be lobbying for future super bowls, future tv negotiations, or just having inner circle access whenever major league decisions are being made. Bob McNair did hold that sort of power despite not being an owner for as long as others. These years could firmly place the Texans in the lower middle class... a tier they've never been in before.... and there's not much optimism that Cal's personality or status alone would elevate them back.
Given the competence of local media outlets, they could also likely be confused about Josh McDaniels vs. Josh McCown simply because both have Josh and Mc in their names. At this point the Texans deserve every bit of ridicule and apathy they're about to have heaped upon them.
Would not be surprised if this wasn't a league mandated move. If these bozos hired McClown, they would have offered conclusive proof of the allegations in Flores' lawsuit - qualified and experienced black coaches are getting sham interviews while a dweeb with NO NFL or collegate coaching experience gets a head coaching gig after being a volunteer HS coach. They still want McClown and this is just a Culley move on their part.
It's one thing for media members to speculate the Texans wanted to hire McCown, but Pancakes directly said "Josh McCown was told he was getting the job." He even responded later in the interview when asked what's next for McCown something like "If I were McCown and the Texans offered me a staff role after pulling a commitment to be the HC I'd tell them where they could stick it." He even said that the staff was planned with Lovie at DC and Pep as OC which makes sense as well. I know Pancakes is spotty with his takes, but when he definitively makes a claim like that I think it's well sourced. McClain does know Lovie Smith personally.
Well all somebody in the media has to do is ask them that. Too bad the national media is in bed with the NFL and would never go that route... and the local media has always been incompetent and has too many co-sponsors of the Texans to delve further into these shenanigans. And there is already enough proof/awareness that qualified minority black head coaches don't get the same opportunities as other up/coming prospects. The NFL just released a statement admitting that its a problem. But others here will somehow spin a tale about how Lovie was the guy all along...
eh, he's part of the institutional problem... both with the Texans and the local media issues. But yeah, this isn't hard to deduce that something had to happen for Lovie Smith to now be the lead candidate. This was't some master-planned course of events.
Pancakes likely has Diabetes-related dementia. The fact that this man can walk around unaided is a tribute to American capitalism, or, proof that he sold his soul to the devil. Based on how he looks, I am leaning toward the latter.
Did Pancakes actually say, "John McCown"? Because if he did, it just proves what I said in my previous post. Dementia.
I don't think anyone will try to spin the Lovie all along narrative. I do KNOW that the McNair family loves Lovie Smith. Bob wanted to hire him after Kubiak and got talked into Obrien. (LOL Korn Ferry!) They got Lovie on board for DC here before they were even done with their HC interviews last year. They had Lovie on board to stay as DC after firing Culley. Pep Hamilton is here because of Lovie. So there's no doubt that Lovie is well liked by this organization. Any why not? He's EXACTLY the type of black man that owners like to hire. - Well spoken - "nice guy" - fatherly figure to black players - man of high moral character - Christian, talks about his faith You look back at the black men who get head coaching gigs and it's almost universal that they check those boxes. (NFL) Imagine an NFL owner signing off on a grumpy, butt chinned, foul mouthed, control freak fat black man that fights with players and coaches. If you're black you need to be the kindly, God fearing father figure.
I understand that, but if they felt Smith was that great a coach they would have kept him over Morris. Having slept on it, I am fine with Lovie Smith. The Texans are basically kicking the can down the road but they won't be good the next couple of years anyway. I think the fact that they handled all of this is what has rubbed me the wrong way.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...ers-surprise-fire-coach-lovie-smith/78393788/ Buccaneers shockingly fire coach Lovie Smith I did have it wrong though, it wasn't Raheem Morris it was Dirk Koetter that they were desperate to keep and were afraid they were going to lose him. Everyone likes Lovie Smith, but nobody thinks he's one of the football savants that teams are chasing like a "Sean McVay or Kyle Shannahan." Bucs thought they had one in Koetter and were scared to lose him. I'm not making this point as some defense of Lovie, more of a "how ironic" that he's getting this job when the team really WANTS a young offensive genius but can't nail that down.
So Flores has helped the Texans more in one week with his one lawsuit than Cal has in his entire tenure as owner. This sham press conference is going to be hilarious, why even have one, just release a statement.
This will be his third head coaching job if he ends up getting it. Regardless of race, most coaches don't get 3.
