Even if he was born in Australia, he'd still be an American entertainment icon given his success and notoriety here.

The ADL charter is not to represent the Jewish people, it is to fight hate against the Jewish people.

So when Whoopi said the holocaust was white on white crime, why did that piss off the ADL?

The ADL statement was regarding her comment that the Holocaust was not about race. I can understand why her saying that would offend people. I don't agree with her. But I can understand why she would say that and it wasn't intended to diminish what happened to the Jewish people during the Holocaust in any shape or form.

Also I do not see the ADL as the representative of the Jewish people. A defender? Sure. But not the representative. I know too many Jews who disagree with the ADL and it's politics.

The part where you say Mel Gibson suffered no negative impacts. The dude was a pariah for years.

Sure but my point is that he is doing fine and making movies still, and what he has done - repeatedly crossing the line egregiously, seems to be forgiven and forgotten compared to minor infractions of others.

Right, except someone cannot convert to being black but they can covert to being a Jew.... one is a faith.

I honestly don't know what Whoopi does or doesn't do believe, but I do know that she is far from the first person in Hollywood to use a name other than their birthname.

Mel Gibson still is a pariah in Hollywood. To this day there are actors and actresses, many of them Jews, that refuse to work on a movie if he has anything to do with it. He was cut out of the Hangover series as a tattoo artist in an awesome scene because Zach G would not agree to do any publicity for the movie or finish the movie if Gibson was in it.

Mel Gibson has done a lot of questionable things beyond his comments on Jews... his divorce was very messy. His comments to the police officer, his threats of physical violence to his weird girlfriend and other comments negative towards women. He went from having an excellent reputation with women to being completely marginalized, even when the content he puts out as an actor is excellent the last 5-10 years.

Ehhh.... I get where you are coming from but it is really not that simple. First anti-semitism existed long before Hitler was of any relevance.

Jews had been in Germany since the Middle Ages. Jews were not even given equal rights in Germany until the 19th century and after that still remained largely second class citizens in Germany. Jews were always the convenient targets when things went poorly in Germany. They were blamed for the plague and were blamed for economic and political instability. Jews during these times were rounded up by mobs and murdered all across Germany and it was wide spread. In fact it took the Catholic Church to step in and end the killing of Jews and protecting the Jews. Then Jews were murdered during the Crusades and wars as well.

After the defeat of Napoleon and sick of being carved up, Germany began to have a growing sense of nationalism, that they didn't want to be a series of small groups but a single power. That growing sense of nationalism in the 1800's did not mesh well with Judaism in Germany because some (not all) Jews kept their own social identity and distinct culture, which upset some German nationalists.

Germany around the 1850's was being pushed hard by the powers in Europe to not have a military or growing economy. This upset Germans as they did not like being limited in growth. By 1900 Germany was a sleeping giant and believed its destiny to be the largest power in central Germany. In WWI there were pacifists, communists, anarchists and some Jews that refused to fight in WWI. The loss of WWI was devastating and shocking to Germans and they were stripped of power and prosperity. Many of the WWI vets when they returned were involved in issues with anarchists and communists. The economy was bad, many of these soldiers were addicted to drugs and had PTSD. The convenient scape goat was the group of Jews. Some Jews were doing well financially after the WWI (many were not) and they were singled out by far right groups for their ethnicity and religion. This was BEFORE anyone knew who Hitler was.... and Hitler learned from others and he just was an incredibly successful leader that became the poster child for it.

Anti Jewish sentiment was very, very common in Germany and most of the Western world. Jews were not popular in the USA or GB either. In fact Germany at first wanted the Jews to just leave Germany and let those that were German nationalists live in the region. Like 2/3's of Jews left Germany before the official passing of laws against Jews. Himmler offered to pay other nations to take the remaining Jews but all of Western Europe and North America passed because Jews were not popular. The Germans were actually going to try and send them to Africa.

While all this was going on, there were Jews that were lashing out against the German anti-semitism of the time. They were blowing up stuff, etc. They also in some cases were aligned with anarchists and papers in Germany would gladly publish reports of Jew and anarchist behavior, which only made relations worse.

The murder of Jews was largely pushed over the starting line by Reinhard Heydrich who said to start shooting jews when found in communities. This was the procedure that was used in WWI for ethnic cleansing on both sides. The shooting was used until Himmler was receiving reports of German soldiers killing themselves or trying to go AWOL after murdering Jews at order of the Nazi leaders. Himmler went down to provide moral and shot a Jew himself but brain matter splattered on him and he got sick. He then pushed for alternative ways such as gassing and eventually concentration camps.

For all the talk of Hitler and Himmler and Goering, they were not the worst. All three were terribly anti-semitic but there were worse. Goering saved Jews that he personally cared about (truth be told he didn't really care much about anyone but himself), Hitler also did not let a small group of Jews not be murdered. Himmler was terrible.... but he was arguably not as bad and Reinhard Heydrich who was actually killing too many Jews. Hitler ordered him to slow down his liquidation of the Jews.

It would be nice to say that Hitler brainwashed Germany into killing Jews, but it wouldn't be accurate. Further, while nations like the USA and Canada and GB like to take the high road, they all were horribly anti-semitic as well. The Catholic church has a mixed legacy in the protection of Jews depending on who was in power.

The ADL reports on Jewish organizations, along with hate groups of any other American subculture.

She probably wanted to push a nicer Sheen on her image, which was doubly marginalized due to not having a Wayne.

The target audience of the view and Clutchfans has very little overlap.

I don’t know if the audience of the D&D realizes there’s more than three channels on their RCA CRT TV

    CNN
    Fox News
    OWN / The Oprah Network
