If anyone thinks Cal is going to hire some uppity minority from Brooklyn they're a bigger fool than he is.
That’s a fair take to have. It also sounds like he’s throwing a fit because he didn’t get the job he wanted. He felt he was better than Daboll.
Per insider on the other forum Gannon will be the HC and it was going to be announced today but the Flores lawsuit may have delayed said announcement.
Rooney rule was made with good intentions but as a result of it absolutely humiliated Flores. Imagine flying to an interview for a job you know has been filled 3 days before to be pandered to check a box. Anyone would feel rightly embarrassed, especially someone as qualified as Flores. Texans hiring McCown with Flores pubically vouching for the job would be a horrible look but I doubt they care.
McCown getting the job over him would be a disgrace. But that doesn’t mean he’s the best candidate over the others either. His opinion of himself doesn’t trump others qualifications. Except for McCown
First, it depends on what statistics you consider. The NFL has said themselves that almost 70% of their players are black. I am sure that number likely includes biracial players. What percentage of OC's are black? What percentage of DC? are black? What percentage of executives are black? I agree, "hire the best candidate regardless of race".... but that is the point, that isn't what has been happening. It was the same with black quarterbacks, they were NOT given equal opportunities... when they were, the number of black quarterbacks increased. You can call it tribalism or familiarity if you want, but the outcome is exactly the same and it is racism in outcome. Also, once you are in the club, you don't stay..... the history of hiring and firing show that to not be the case. Something can be racist without the person saying "I will never hire a black person".
Has that insider been correct before? Would rather have KEVIN! Interwebs people are also insinuating Harbaugh is saying his goodbyes in Michigan
LFG!!! I want Mike zimmer and his son Klint kubiak Terrance Newman Munchak All on our staff next year
The statistics are from an actual study on the diversity of the NFL in 2021. They are as accurate as anything can get. Im not disputing anything you said. OC vs DC is probably more to do with there being more white players on the offensive line and at QB. Absolutely there needs to be more opportunities for minority hires, that still doesn’t mean they are the best candidates. In fact, the majority of coaches have never even played in the NFL.
The statistics you listed don't include biracial players as black and we can debate whether they should or should not..... it isn't important to me, and it doesn't really matter to me if 59% of the league is black of 70%..... the fact remains that the amount of black people in decision making positions is extremely low compared to raw statistical numbers and that is very damning. If you really believe that NFL teams are choosing the "best" candidates, and those happen to be 90% white, then so be it.... but I will tell you as someone with a masters in economics and studied statistics a great deal in under grad and then grad school, it is statistically almost impossible. Huge groups of people are not being considered.
To the last part, I totally agree. The inverse of that scenario is true too though, there’s no way 13% of the general public is the majority percentage of specific sports. There’s a bias there as well. Statistics, athletic testing and coaching is my career and what my degrees are in. There are absolutely biases in leadership. No one can deny it. There’s also no concrete percentage in demographics. White people might be over represented in specific roles compared to the demographics of players. But not when compared to general public or collegiate, high school and professional athletes. Which is where most coaches come from. Minorities are severely underrepresented when compared to professional demographics, but over represented when compared to general public and high school and collegiate athletes. Edit* The other outlier is the extreme underrepresentation of non black minorities.
I'll just say this. If I am a confident top assistant with a good track record and in demand.... I wouldn't take the Texans job. I know that it is difficult to get a head coaching job, and the increase in pay and contract length are enticing..... but the Texans are a very troubling organization based on recent history. The owner appears to be swayed and influenced. The organization has a history of power struggles between the GM and the head coach. The owner is very hands on but manipulated by people like Easterby who are not qualified for the power they wield. The organization is very religious and has a culture that comes with it. The owner hasn't shown he knows how to hire the right people to run his football program. Former players have a very negative opinion of the organization. Hell, one of the GM's lasted less than a year and the HC from last year lasted one season. That doesn't even get into having a controlling GM and a lack of talent on the roster. If I am a top candidate to get a job, I look at the Texans as a potential career killer at this point.
So that just leaves McCown. Kevin goes to the Jaguars. Gannon to the Saints. Flores to Telemundo NFL broadcasts
I wonder if Goodell has called the Texans. "What are you doing you idiots? You cannot hire McCown. Have you seen the lawsuit? You will be proving his point!!!"
This would be my issue. Coaches aren't getting 2nd opportunities as much anymore. Do you really want your first (and possibly only) HC opportunity to be one where the roster is terrible, the GM and whatever-Easterby-is are meddlesome, a non-wanted QB that's taking $40MM in cap space for who knows how long, and you might not even get to pick your staff? It's a recipe to fail on not-your-own-merits. It seems if I'm a coach that thinks I have other opportunities, I avoid the Texans at all costs.
