Olympian Eileen Gu ruffles US skiers with decision to compete for China She could be America’s next Olympic darling — a stunning 18-year-old skier who signed with Victoria’s Secret and plans to attend Stanford after she vies for gold in Beijing. But Eileen Gu won’t be competing for the US. https://www.google.com/amp/s/nypost...ompeting-for-china-is-ruffling-us-skiers/amp/
She does not live in China but has gone back to China during the summers since she was a kid. So it's not like she has no connection. She was raised solely by her Chinese born mother, speaks fluent Chinese, and spent a significant amount of time there growing up. That being all said, this is a business decision. Just like Naomi Osaka who was also raised in the US. Osaka is the highest paid female athlete in the world.
Interesting. I guess if Mike Piazza can represent Italy in baseball anything goes. It also reinforces that if you’re not Anglo American, you’re not truly American. Michael Phelps would have never swam for the UK.
Yep she already has so many deals in China this is all about building an international brand. It's lame she competes in snow rollerblading, but we have Victoria Secret ads to look forward to so whatever.
Imagine if the USA Tennis Men's players all went for countries they are really from... Pete Sampras = Greece Andre Agassi = Iran Michael Chang - China
On top the money, China doesn't recognize dual citizenship. The fact that she still spends most of her time here, and travels freely, means she hasn't renounced US citizenship. The only way she can rep China is if the CCP cut her a special deal.
It really a testament of the global economy. The American market doesn't have the dominance it once did. Part of the reason Shohei Ohtani agreed to come a year early even if it cost him about 65 million dollars in Salary is because he made up some of that money in endorsement contracts. https://www.nationalsarmrace.com/?p=14619
It really doesn't matter if CCP doesn't recognize it. The US does so she can still use her US passport in the US. However, a special deal was likely since she's one in a billion type talent.
To claim naturalized chinese citizenship you have to renounce other citizenships. You aren't allowed to have a US passport anymore, at least not publicly.
Is she naturalized though? I don't know what the rules are for Chinese citizenship for a person born to a Chinese citizen.
Sounds unpatriotic to me but I guess money talks. Has she even repped the US before in previous skiing comps?
Controversy sells. If she was actually Chinese no one would give two *****. Or if she just skied for the US she’d be an unknown.
No one would care if she wasn't super pretty. Chloe Kim is a big deal because she's cute. That combined with her being phenomenal at what she does makes her marketable.
