There you go again, othering an entire group of people.

Do you not understand it's wrong to mischaracterize an entire group of people because of some?

Not all conservatives mischaracterize what the main goals were.

Do you really believe all conservatives and right-wingers say stuff like this?

And I have never heard anybody claim they wanted socialism therefore Holocaust, how does that even work?

 

Ask pretty much any of my right wing friends and acquaintances. I don't get it either.


Anyways I'm sure you never mischaracterize or generalize "the left".

Not to jump in the middle here, but I've seen it quite a bit where right wingers will make a point about because Socialism is in the abbreviated title Nazi, that socialism is a danger that can lead to a holocaust. It has been said here a few times to me specifically.

But no not all conservatives, or Republicans would make that jump. I am more than comfortable though saying pretty much all Republicans or Conservatives will take leaps to mischaracterize Democrats as socialists, and then use the most extreme examples to link to Socialism in order to fear monger against Democrats. How many times have you heard something along the lines of "Just look at Venezuela.... that's what happens when you let Socialists like AOC, and Bernie Sanders run a country." They might not say "Look at the Holocaust... that's what you get when you let socialists like Bernie Sanders run the country." But they'll be coy to say that about Democrats and Venezuela, and then link Socialism to the Nazi Socialist party.

However history and facts show that Hitler's Nazi party at the time was actually the Conservative right wing party.



It's just a historical fact, and the right does need to be more fair IMO in it's games of trying to link Democrats to the most insane examples as a fear mongering political tactic. Does the left do it??... Yes, but I think we are doing everyone a disservice but completely avoiding how facism started in Europe after WW1 and calling out what is happening now with the Republican party as it being what it is now. It doesn't mean we need to fear monger that Trump is going to put college kids from Berkley in concentration camps or anything. There's no need to fear monger, but there is a need to educate, and call a spade a spade.

So it's a balancing act of being fair to one another, but also when the Republican party is openly supporting an autocrat wannabe dictator who tried to overturn Democracy... we kinda need to be able to acknowledge that fact.

 

That was my point and I don't think pretty much all Republicans and conservatives mischaracterize Democrats as socialist, there are examples of conservatives here that do not peddle in that.

And the majority do not use the Holocaust to denigrate socialist.

The Democratic Party was once all for slavery as well, so context matters, we can acknowledge everything without making blanket statements about a certain group of people.

 

Maybe you just need better friends or get out more around other conservatives, and why do you think your friends represent the majority?

Their rhetoric also aligns with the majority of right wing and conservative media rhetoric when it comes to Nazis. "Nazis bad because socialism". Yes that is the general premise the right wing propagates.

Agreed… but if Republican voters overwhelmingly vote Trump back into power I think some harsh generalities are earned. You can’t hide that like 80% of Republican voters still support the guy openly today in polling. And you can’t hide what his brand is at this point.

The other 20% that say they don’t support that dangerous brand of authoritarianism sort of need to EARN my trust since basically all of them in my personal life at least said to me that they didn’t vote for the guy, or act coy about “best bad choice” etc and then magically after a couple of beers go full MAGA and admit it eventually.

We are talking about friends and family with people we generally care about and think otherwise are good people. That’s why I think there’s an honest conflict of calling something what it obviously is while trying to keep the fabric of our social lives together by not treating these people as cancers to society.

Long story short… it’s complicated… but it also was pretty complicated in 1930’s Germany too when the world convinced itself that this same brand wasn’t really that bad. 1940’s Germany… not so complicated.
