It would help if he can learn how to flop offensively like Kevin Martin. Martin consistently got to the line even thought he was just as lanky as Green.
He just REALLY needs to get in the gym in the off-season and get to work. He’s not an nba level starter at the moment and is riding his #2 pick to those starts. You can’t genuinely sit here and say Christopher doesn’t deserve more of Green’s minutes. Admittedly, I’m disappointed and can’t help lose a little faith in Green, but he needs time.
Not saying it's false at all, but where did you get this stat and how is that number determined (ex: if Jalen sprints to the corner 3 on help defense and they make it, is it counted in this stat?). I know Anfernee Simons went off on Jalen the other day, despite Green having really good contests against him. So, if it's just 1 on 1 it won't surprise me one bit
Kevin Martins rookie season he averaged 3ppg and 1.2 FTA per game. Didnt start a single game 2nd year Kevin Martin started 41 games and averaged 11ppg on 3FTA per game. Just sayin'
That has very little to do with Jalen benefitting from learning how to draw fouls from players that had his frame. I get it, you want to defend Green, but Apollo's words of advice is true. We are aware it's going to take time
You can find this stat at nba.com -->stats-->sortable player stats-->change general to defense dashboard-->change advanced filters to Houston Rockets and you can set the number of games you want to look at. I believe it is measured with the defender nearest to the ball handler when he scores (it could be that he has to be within 3 feet or something). It's hard to measure defense but this stat does okay. Just put a good defender in there and you can see if it passes the eye test (Thybulle is -7%, Draymond is -4.5%, Gobert is -5.4%). Team defense plays a big role and the Rockets suck at that of course. But this metric suggests that Martin and Gordon and Tate are our best defenders. Wood is up there too, but big men generally have better defense by this stat because they help weakside near the rim.
This. Green has tried defensively for the most part but he is a poor defender. He doesn't have the best instincts and is slow to rotate or know where to be. Beyond that he is physically not strong and he has a bad wingspan. Defensively he has limited upside. His athleticism and feet will help him, and I suspect he will work very hard and get stronger. Still he is limited, and ideally has a strong defender at the guard and inside to cover some of his limitations.
Thanks! Very helpful. I'm still interested to see how his 1 on 1 defense has trended over the course of the season -- the stat is close, but 1 on 1 is still different than being measured by who is closest. The eye tests says he's improved mostly on straight up 1 on 1 and staying with his man through screens off ball. He still needs a ton of work on his team defense, which is arguably more important throughout the game than 1 on 1 defense and I agree your stat does a good job of spotting the good vs the bad defenders, Do you know if there is one strictly 1 on 1? To be clear - this isn't an attempt to pick a few numbers here and there to say Green is a good defender -- I realize he isn't one yet.
People talk a lot about Green's D and there is a reason for it; he's pretty terrible at D. The good news it that he at least puts in the effort. It's not like he's out there just mailing it in. As he gains muscle and experience, he will get better at it as long as he keeps the effort.
I'm not even alarmed by his defense, we drafted to be an offensive player. You can usually hide weak defensive players if you have system. It's his offense that worries me. I would rather take a good offensive player with bottom of the barrel defense than the other way around for a No. 2 pick.
He has plenty of enthusiasm, but he lacks both length and girth....and he doesn't know what he's doing. Not going to make much of a positive impact that way.
So its just going to be a year or so of all the haters just giving each other a reach around for stating the obvious? Great!
