Whoopi Goldberg (Caryn Johnson) makes bad Holocaust statement, makes worse apology

Is that supposed to be the new “the Civil War wasn’t about slavery, it was about state rights” dumbass talking point?

 

Whoopi gonna need a cushion after this fall from grace.

 

People are taking a subtle point of whether or not Judaism is a religion or a race of people and turning into something bigger. It's understandable that a black woman who is Jewish might not consider it to be a race, even though it's more complicated than that.

So the question is, does @tinman feel she should be fired from ABC? Or will it take a Ted Nugent protest?

 

She is a popular person, not a smart one. Bring back Elizabeth Hasslebeck but dont cancel Whoopi.

 

Well to be fair to Whoppie, Nazis thought Black people were even lower in their race hierarchy than Jews. In fact one of the reasons the Nazis hated the Jews is because they thought the Jews played a large role in bringing in "the others" (Africans, Asians etc) into the Reinland.

That same thread of conspiracy is expressed by the modern right also. You hear in their rhetoric about people like Soros funding migrant caravans. The right believes that one of the end goals of the Jews is to dilute the white race.

Anyways this doesn't sound as bad once you realize she's merely trying to make a distinction between race and religion. It's not a hill I would die on but what this isn't is Whoopie trying to downplay the Holocaust.

The Nazi's wanted to systematically get rid of the Jews in Western Europe. They offered to put all the Jews in Germany on a boat and send them to another part of the world and no other nation on the planet agreed to take them. Having said that, the desire to erase groups of people off the planet by the Germans was not limited to Jews, they were just their largest target. They wanted to eliminate Romas, all homosexuals, activist Catholics and communists..... there were at least 11 million people killed in the concentration camps........ and 6 million of them were Jews, but another 5 million were not Jews.

 

If I remember correctly she does consider herself Jewish.

 

And most Jews self-identify as white.

It doesn't mean her statement was correct or not offensive, but clearly she wasn't trying to be inflammatory but make a broader point. It wasn't as if she was denying the holocaust - she was in fact defending Maus and that it should not be taken out of the classroom.

Feels like this is another instance of someone saying something offensive when taken out of context and blowing it up into much ado about nothing.

 

As @Nook pointed out, The Holocaust was about the annihilation of 11 million people, of which 6 million were Jews.

 

I don't know how many Jews @Nook speaks for vs the ADL. What I do know is that Nook stated the correct facts and the guy you quoted did not.

 

Why does anyone care about or seek Whoopi Goldberg's thoughts on anything?
