Man, I hope that isn‘t the case. I was always under the impression, that he was more overwhelmed and didn‘t feel comfortable in the way he was used. But then again I didn‘t see many full games this year - and your Francis comparisson seems to be pretty good…
I really hope I'm wrong. He is young and if he is a hard worker then hopefully he can do it. What I would really like to hear from him is not, "I took 500 practice shots" but "I was ready to steal that pass because that team used the same play in 3 of the last 4 games in crunch time."
I was one of the dudes that was fully on the draft Jalen Green train. I think even now there are few people that believe in him more than me. I absolutely believe that he will be a very good NBA player down the line, but we need to call it like it is. In my eyes, his rookie season has been more than a little disappointing, especially considering the hopes that I had coming in (I had him pegged as a 17-18 points a game scorer on decent efficiency and he has been far from that). When I am critical of him, it is because I see that he can and MUST be better, and I will continue to be critical because there is a lot to criticize. Does that mean I’m giving up on him? Hell no! I’d wager almost nobody has. But he’s been playing like he’s hit a wall and as long as he’s doing poorly then I will continue to be critical. He’s shown flashes, but it’s looking like this draft class will be a special one, and flash will only get you so far without substance. I look forward to seeing how things go from here. It’s going to be a wild, terrifying, bipolar and hopefully ultimately triumphant adventure
Interesting example. Some people swear that STL% is the most informative stat for individual defensive efficiency, since it encompasses both individual skills and attributes (athleticism, reach, wingspan, quickness) as well as positional awareness, or what you describe: attention and study of the offense. I can certainly see the rationale, but what makes me a bit skeptical is that the stat also rewards gambling. Westbrook has high STL% usually, but is not a good defender, he’s a cheater and gambler. Nevertheless I do pay attention to STL% and steals in general…
I think we need to look at it like this. He is still 19 yrs old, he played against grown men last yr and he played well, also he's played against grown men this yr too. I would be panicking if he hasn't shown flashes at the beginning of the yr but he has. I think it's more of him having tired legs
Absolutely it is too early to give up on him! Also what would "giving up" actually entail? Not picking his Yr 3 Option? We have time to decide that, but given our cap situation I doubt JG’s $10M will be a factor in 2023, unless we have some miraculous KD/Kyrie sitch develop and we need 2 max slots (close to zero chance of that happening). We’re stuck with this kid for awhile, other than dreamcasting we don’t have other good options. Giving-up is not a real option, IMO (a trade to a "bigger fool’ is not realistic, either)
He just has the least basketball experience. No college, and replaced it with 1/3rd of a g league season. Low bball iq players are divided into selfish and unselfish. The selfish ones never end up improving their bball iq. The unselfish ones always end up good team players at a minimum. You'll observe this in the rest of the NBA as well. Jalen's going to be fine. He's an old school type. Hard worker, always gives 100% on the court and team-oriented. The way he has been forcing his way to the line at an elite rate for a rookie while he's in a shooting slump says very high iq to me. He's kind of bullying his way there with no frame to support him and defenders dropping way back. He also cut out mid range jumpers, recognizing he needs to go back to basics on finishing at the rim and 3pt mechanics. That screams high iq to me, very mature decision, it's too easy to fall in love with the mid range game and ruin your career like Melo. The kid made some poor development choices along the way obviously but it's ok he's still 19. Jalen is that kid that is good at everything he tries, it's annoying for everyone else but we're lucky to have that star quality. Equally important, bball iq in your rookie season is totally unrelated to how good you're going to be. Shaq, Kobe, MJ and Hakeem looked like idiots in their rookie seasons as far as basketball iq goes.
It will really depend on if how we draft in the future. If our next pick shows star level prominence, and if JC improves more, Green will be gradually thrown to the side. He realistically doesn't have that much time. I am thinking about the busts in the past, Thabeet, Derrick Williams, Dragan Bender etc. they just fade away minutes wise when other prospects show more promises and take away their minutes. At some point the team wants to win, and we won't just baby sit him and give him free minutes.
Did you ressearch him well? I had no idea about Mobley, Green, Suggs and Barnes at the draft. I merely guessed that King Cade would be great as he could do so many things like Luka.
Absolutely! The big difference in recent years is the Gleague as a true minor league. A young player who’s determined to make it can go there and develop his skills, and when playing time opens-up can come-in already in shape.
I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that Jalen isn’t the only player in the nba to work out or put up shots after practice. He may just need the rah rah video evidence more than others as damage control for his play on the court. A+ work for the PR team once again, as it is apparently working on some of the fans!
Again, I hope you're right. From a stats perspective, I am most concerned with the low A/TO rate (2.2/2.3). That is below average for guards, and is quite a bit worse than any of Cunningham, Mobley, Suggs, Barnes, and Mitchell. He doesn't seem to think about where his teammates will be before he drives, and only gets assists when he notices them mid-play. He needs to learn to predict the actions of the other 9 players are on the court.
I know most of you guys didn’t follow the predraft stuff with Green, but the biggest red flags for me besides just watching him play was, during his aau stint with Josh Christopher, it was Christopher who stood out at times instead of the more highly touted Green. During his g league stint, it was Kuminga who was the best player on the team before getting hurt. An alpha he is not. It is no surprise at all that the other rookies even on the Rockets have outshined him this year, it is not a coincidence it is a trend. He’s been riding unsubstantiated hype from preteen social media and Filipino fans for years now. It’s Linsanity all over again, but this time we didn’t even get a 9 or whatever game hot streak.
I agree he’s lost his confidence. I’m not so down in him as others. Now, I’m not sure he will pan out, but I’m still going to be patient. Also feel like he may be hitting a bit of a wall. I am also not sure he’s clicking with the Silas offense. Need to see him develop different parts of his game or he will get left behind. He does not have that entitled mentality, so, I believe he will work hard to improve.
He hasn't even reached the all star break of his first season and already has tired legs? We're really reaching to the bottom of the barrel of excuses for him, I guess. It's okay to say he's been terrible but is young and can turn it around. Not sure he will ever amount to the player he was touted to be, but I would be happy to be wrong.
