Yeah but I don't understand why you would remove someone's hot shooting from the equation unless you're also removing the especially cold shooting nights. What are we supposed to derive from his shooting minus his best shooting?

that's right you have to trim outliers on both sides to get a more stable average…

He's got to do a lot more than just get stronger, he's got to fix his shooting mechanix .... figure out how to finish at the rim and come up with a solution for the mid range.

I can't believe he went thru high school, AAU ball and the GL with that ugly ass shot and no one thought to tell him it needed work. Must have been surrounded by yes men.

Not this year. Lol. I try to cheer myself up by telling myself that we shouldn’t even have Green. We could have lost the pick to OKC anyway.

People just wanted Green to be the franchise player. Now I just hope he’s a franchise starter

I tried that, but then I looked Tre Mann’s (the #18 pick) numbers, and they are pretty bad, but not really worse than Green’s…
At this point avoiding the OKC swap looks like a wash, we just have a slightly higher payroll because of it and that’s it…

Finishing strongly goes hand in hand with putting on muscle. Green quite literally does not have the strength to reliably finish through contact. As for his midrange, that will come to when he improves his shot. Just like building strength however, that will take time as well.

Players like Kyrie, ja, iverson were not strong at all. They just had a variety of finishes like jump stops, 2 foot floater, euro step, opposite hand. When green drives he feels obligated to put up a layup shot that gets blocked often. He needs to drive back out and reset in those instances because it's predictable. They're overplaying his drives by meeting him at the rim and daring him for midrange shots that he won't take

Jalen needs to abandon the shot machine and get with a real basketball trainer

And you don't think that the team's players succeeding lines up with that? Kind of a dense take to be honest.

you’re not following the convo obviously.
It was about whether JG’s ‘work ethics’ is real or an elaborate PR campaign.

I personally don’t have opinion on that.
However if it was just a PR campaign, it obviously is successful for JG and does nothing for the Rockets. A Rockets fan would not give sht whether JG PR team is making him succeed as a marketable celebrity or not.

I repeat: I know nothing about JG’s work ethics.

However what I do know is that his team managed to way oversell him, masterfully, to NBA media and commentariat prior to the draft.

Was that a success for JG? ABSOLUTELY! He gets publicity, #2 pick salary, etc…
Was that a success for the Rockets? Absolutely NOT.

So some poster questioned whether the ‘work ethics’ story is not a similar propaganda

Follow the convo before running your mouth, kid.

A good portion of the strength training he needs to do should also be focused on the legs. His struggles with shooting start there - more than some broken shot. His upper body reminds me of all boys before they hit that growth spurt into a man body it will happen with all our rookies. Most of it is going to work itself out naturally. He's putting forth great effort on the court even if the results are less than desirable. He's shown great ability to finish in traffic already. Kid has some bad games and its like his critics forget what he CAN do in order to keep latching onto preconceived notions/unconscious bias. He's flashed EVERYWHERE it just hasn't been consistent. Too many caught up in short term thinking for what WINS? SMH. This team was destined to lose badly this year AND next. Developing young talent is a process. Infinitely more difficult HERE for many different reasons.

Just checked Tre Mann’s numbers. It’s a wash so far.
I do think JG has higher potential. So winning that lottery does buy us some more dreamcasting time…

I think he needs the All Star break to refresh. He is showing more that he can chase rebounds and improve that part of his game. His shooting has gone down last month but that is just growing pains. His playmaking and passing seems to be more of a focus lately. Had at least 4 assists in 3 of the last 7 games. He will be fine, just growing pains you expect from a rookie

When facts prove that you’re an incompetent moron, try to gaslight and BagdadBob it to save your azz.
    Solid strategy, I agree.

the most annoying thing about green's game is when he just catches the ball, waits for about 3-5 seconds, then just passes it right back to the person who passed it to him.

what is the game plan? what is Silas telling him to do? fans don't get these kinds of insides of the plan, so they only guess on what he should be doing. They want to share the shots and scoring load. My guess is Jalen gets the ball and looks to see if there is room to drive, if there isn't he passes the ball back

It is annoying but he's making the right read. His teammates often slow down the offense and then give him the ball against a set defense. Like we all know Green is not good at scoring that way right now, why would he do anything but survey the defense and then pass it off? My only grip is he takes too long to recognize this, but again that's part of him being unprepared for the NBA.

This is where we have to be careful not to turn him into a Westbrook who puts his head down and attacks with no regard to what's going on in front of him. IMO he needs to start making more of his open catch and shoot 3's as a priority. There's a lot to work on with his game and he seems to be a quick learner, but I would say open 3's and a Euro step as a matter of urgency so that we make large gains in his on-floor impact. Hard to put that first step to good use when his defender is sagging off him like he's Ben Simmons.

Euro step will probably be end of this season or beginning of next. I think he can work the kinks out of his 3pt mechanics this season though, they are letting him shoot and he is training hard on it, he's racking up an exceptional amount of training right now. Hard to see him not getting better at it as the season progresses and especially in the summer.

That‘s where I blame coaching. Right now we have an ultra athletic guy with a streaky shot with bad mechanics, that struggles to finish through contact and with ball handles. As a coach you should look at that and figure out, what he needs to work on to get better. Right now his best asset is his ability to get by a defender even without a screen. So let‘s start there. Teach him what to do once he gets by him. Where does the help defender come from, where are his (open) teammates, what kind of shot should he take and when should he pass. How can you still score, when there is a bigger, stronger defender in your way or how can you draw a foul?

At the same time, work on his shot mechanics and handles - and if there is time left on defense and rebounding.

Now I am sure all of this is happening - but I am not sure if it is happening enough and you don‘t really see that many plays for him in a game. Maybe it is time to pull him from the lineup for 2-4 weeks and have him in a gym 8 hours a day, to at least get the plan right. Because what is happening right now doesn’t seem to improve his playing but might shatter his believe in himself.

I agree with all this, but what keeps getting glossed over is he has a low bbiq, which is the biggest red flag. Players can get better at this, but it is something beyond taking extra practice shots, learning moves, or putting on muscle. He has to actually learn the game of basketball. Right now he is a skinnier, worse passing, worse dribbling version of Steve Francis, and we saw how his bbiq limited his career despite his physical skills.
