It’s far too early to call Green a bust or say he won’t be a player. Honest question here… I just want to know what one, just one thing that he does well? I don’t want to hear he’s 19. I realize he has a long way to go. I’m just trying to figure out what his skill set is. Being athletic is not a skill set.
Welp, Jalen is looking markedly better on defense, and now he’s just pretty bad on that end instead of one of the league’s worst. Surprised at his ability to stay in front of people, and his effort...wish that it didn’t come at the expense of any and all offense. At least he’s drawing and hitting FTs, but right now he’s looking more and more like a project (albeit a project with a good chance of turning out well). He needs to keep working hard, and I think he may very well impress many of us. But right now he’s not there, not even close
He has no skills whatsoever, but he is very quick and can jump completely out of the arena. Right now his bread and butter is uncontested dunks and hoping to get fouls called when he's blocked going straight up in a super predictable manner.
GLeague percentages do not translate that well over to the league. Maybe 36% is like 30% in the league?
I can give you two things, though you might not count one of them. He's really good at blowing past his defender, I don't know if you consider that "being athletic", but his first step allows him to blow by his defender really easily. It maybe isn't too noticeable because he's not very good at turning it into an advantage...not good at drawing fouls, not good at making reads after he draws another defender, not good at finishing contested layups. But he can definitely get past his defender. The second one his his ability to create space with his footwork when he has the ball. Not everyone can do that. Again, similar to the first skill, it doesn't really mean much when you never make the shots. But he can basically get a clean look any time he wants. He creates so much space on his stepback.
The only thing that sticks out to me is his free-throw percentage. He’s really consistent from there, especially as a rookie. Is that grasping at straws a bit?
I agree, and like that you added once he gets by the defender he rarely finishes. He’s not strong enough right now. Gotta hope he learns to finish.
