NetRTG says he’s a plus player. I was specifically referencing a comment about plus offense

    come on, man.

He knew what to do after his first step tonight. he shows flashes of skills, and once in a while puts it all together in the game game. just has to get more consistent at that.

Dominique is my 'perfect outcome' comp to Green
While he was an electric, prolific scorer, that's basically all he gave the Hawks
That's kinda where I see Green if he maxes out

Although you lump them in together, I have never considered Wilkins in the same tier of great with MJ or Bird

9 consecutive AllStar games are nice, but he never got past the 2nd round, and made All-NBA 1st team just once

Some others with 9 or more AS games:
    Westbrook
    Parish
    Drexler
    Melo
    Allen

All fine players, but like Wilkins, nowhere near good enough to headline a contender

Without a true franchise teammate in ATL, I maintain that Nique's greatest career achievement was either the Dunk Contest or his single scoring title
He didn't even make the Dream Team over Mullins

Jalen also seems destined to be remembered for his scoring and dunking ability
He may win a scoring title or 2, and could also make 9 AS games, but he will need an equal, if not better superstar to pair with if he wants to contend

Luckily Sengun could be this guy, or maybe a new PF this June, or a huge trade further down the road

There is a path to Jalen Green becoming the top scorer on a championship team
    I genuinely believe this

He has a LONG way to go, and more importantly, he needs to be 1 of a duo or trio of young stars to become more than Wilkins

Nuance matters - I never said he's not ROY...what I AM saying that when you are at square one as a rebuilding team like Detroit is, Cade is a better contextual choice than Mobley for them and if you can't see the overwhelming evidence that proves championship contenders are built around versatile playmaking leaders that I'm not sure how to respond at this point. People aren't arguing about Cade over Mobley for ROY - the exercise we are talking about here is if all the teams were redrafting today based on what they know now, how would that change their choices and I don't think Detroit would take Mobley over Cade even knowing Mobley is on his way to a ROY award. If Detroit had a generational elite defender in Mobley and no offensive firepower so to speak, I don't think they are necessarily a better team 5 years from now than with Cade...while Mobley makes a TON more sense in Cleveland with Garland and Sexton as lead guards.

If you want to talk ROY, then that is a different thread and I have a different response but in the meanwhile, pay attention to the topic and maybe you will find people aren't as astoundingly stupid as you think they are. Let me help you by taking literally the first few sentences from the first post in this thread of Chad Ford's article:

Mobley is 3rd highest scorer in his entire draft class.

    That's pretty good offense.

    C'mon man.

Earlier in the season Mobley was the rookie who got most of his point from being assisted (~70%), I'm not sure how much that has changed. Makes sense with the great guard play.

I thought his first step was not all that according to the critics?

Yes I understand the thread. If it helps replace “ROY” with “#1 pick” in my statement about Cam Thomas.

You replied to my post with a condescending statement that those of us who think Mobley is great are essentially just looking at the Eastern Conference standings in formulating that opinion. This reply was more of why you prefer Cade, so appreciate that.

My take is Mobley is a borderline all star right now. He has the potential to be generational as a KD-lite on offense who is also the best defensive player in the league. I think nearly every FO would take him first in a redraft unless Cade was pretty much the last piece to have a core to compete for titles. I also think if we’d lost our draft pick to the Thunder opinions about Mobley on CF would be different, though probably both ways to an extent.

But Cade looks good, even with his game last night. I don’t think the Pistons feel bad about their decision or anything.

He'd thrive.... because he's actually a good player.

Then Mobley would defend the 5.

Nice to have another 7 foot starter. Especially one with high IQ and elite ability to switch 1-5.

Without fouling or turning ball over to boot.

It's his finishing that's the issue.

Just needs to work on his bag and his body.

    A lot.

Perennial all-star sounds about right for the ceiling for Green. Not a franchise-altering or generational player though. Like Booker, Murray, Lavine, etc. Green still flourish in the right system, but right now it's not this team makeup.

I agree. I’ll also say if Jalen beefs up and can start finishing through contact he has enough skill to be special - especially when his shots are falling. My remark was because there were people saying his first step wasn’t that good at all and it gets a little confusing keeping up with the narratives when the professional analysts are saying the opposite.

I think you are misstating what was said. It's not that Green's first step isn't good....it's that it's wasted since he has no bag, he has no clue what to do once he gets by his guy unless the rim is completely unprotected.

That's why right now he's really only good in situations where the defense isn't set and he just needs to get by one guy and go straight up. If he uses his quick first step with a set defense, he just gets blocked at the rim or turns it over if he doesn't get bailed out with a whistle.

At the NBA level, you need more than just a quick first step.

Over the next several years he'll try to turn into an NBA player, how well he does with that will determine his ceiling. If he doesn't develop very well, he'll be a Corey Brewer/Lou Williams type as his upside, if he does an exceptionally good job, he could be a Zach LaVine type.

It's impossible to say which path he'll follow.

didn’t shoot it well, but finished with 19, 10, and 10 to go along with 3 steals and a block making play after play in the 4th

    smh, I hate Adam Silver

huh? Adam Silver gave us the opportunity to pick Evan Mobley or Scottie Barnes, as well. We chose to pick Green and we still might end up being right for it.
