    Spotify is removing Neil Young’s music after the musician gave the streaming service an ultimatum, saying it could not provide a platform to both him and Joe Rogan due to the podcast host’s “fake information” on COVID-19 vaccines.

    “I want you to let Spotify know immediately TODAY that I want all my music off their platform. They can have [Joe] Rogan or Young. Not both,” Young wrote in a letter earlier this week to his record label and management team.

    “I am doing this because Spotify is spreading fake information about vaccines — potentially causing death to those who believe the disinformation being spread by them," the 76-year-old “Rockin’ in the Free World” singer said of comments made by the controversial podcast host on his show streamed by Spotify, “The Joe Rogan Experience.”

    “We want all the world’s music and audio content to be available to Spotify users. With that comes great responsibility in balancing both safety for listeners and freedom for creators,” a Spotify spokesperson told ITK in a Wednesday statement.

    “We have detailed content policies in place and we’ve removed over 20,000 podcast episodes related to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic,” the statement said. “We regret Neil’s decision to remove his music from Spotify, but hope to welcome him back soon.”

    Like Neil's principles here but this was dead on arrival unless he had a bunch of other high profile artists join him.

    Spotify's choice is 100% dependent on market feedback. There is no principled position by Spotify here.

    neil young is one of my favorite artists, songwriters, lyricist, musicians ever...but this is just a bad look for him.

    in 2022 joe rogan generates far more revenue than neil young. did he really expect spotify to pick him over rogan?

    he could have taken the principled stand without making a futile demand. just tell them he doesnt want to be associated with a service that gives a platform to rogan and he wants out. thats the end of it. now he just looks like a grumpy old silly hippie. again, i love neil young and he is one of my all-time favorite artists, but from a PR standpoint he handled this poorly.

    here is what he should have said.

    "spotify is giving a voice to people who are spreading dangerous disinformation about vaccines and because of that i no longer wish to be associated with their service and i demand they remove my music immediately. i also encourage other aritsts who feel as i to do the same."

    never even mention rogan by name and definitely dont put some silly ultimatum on them.

    they dont care about neil young, but if he is able to inspire a taylor swift, adelle, billie eilish, ed sheeran to follow suite then they might start caring.

    i think he could have been a little more strategic about this. he could have organized a group of big names such as the ones above to go public en masse. there would have actually been some power behind that.

    Most Artists don't even own their music. Taylor Swift's original recordings are owned by private equity firm.
