I've said this before that many of these attacks are by people who are mentally ill and how we deal with mental illness is atrocious in this country. At the same time part of mental illness is being very susceptible to messages that frequently get repeated in media and the rest of society. That we still continue to see messages blaming "Chinese" for COVID when many can't tell the difference between someone actually from China or from Malaysia.

I also agree there are many cities that need to do more. Again messaging is an issue and this is again a reminder of how poor of a message "Defund the Police" was when it was being thrown around without good planning or clear consensus of what that meant.

The uptick in crimes and hates toward Asian isn't because of the mentally ill - I doubt the # of mentally ill has changed that much since 2019 - but by folks (mentally ill included, extremists, and racists) that were influenced toward hate and violence by the Chinese covid messaging from Trump and other leadership.

So what do you think of this?

SF Resident Sues DA's Office Following Mishandling of AAPI Hate Crime

"I was suddenly and violently attacked by the adult male and his adolescent son brutally attacked me with a long baseball bat," Lê said.

Both attackers were arrested and charged with several felonies including elder abuse and terrorist attacks. However, over the following months the DA's Office pleaded the case down to a misdemeanor assault without Lê's knowledge.

"Because of the way my case has been handled by the San Francisco District Attorney's office, justice has not been served," he said at a press conference held Tuesday.

    ----
Mr. Anh Lê, the plaintiff of the lawsuit, is not asking for money. Rather, he simply wants the courts to make San Francisco District Attorney's Office to do it's job by taking the rights of victims into account when they're considering plea deals.

i get it, you and the other side watch Fox and CNN and legacy media
but fail to see the reality

there's bad race relations, homelessness, mental illness, and crime
and that has nothing to do with politics
it's just modern society that doesn't value education and humanity as a whole

menace 2 society came out in the 90s brah

do you have data that supports your assertion that Trump is somehow responsible for crimes against Asians in (checks notes) San Francisco?

I don't think the homeless are Trump voters (or voters in general). There's an underbelly of racism, xenophobia and crackpot ideas that Trump didn't cause. It's more like he was playing with a fire that was already there. You could call him a catalyst, but he's not the root cause.

Homeless actually spread info quickly amongst themselves. No devices, public shunning, and an aversion to social institutions makes them a community in of itself.

I suspect that's why the initial violence was cowardly and targeted towards the elderly...something you can't explain with Trump... Word got around.

Questions Raised After Suspect In Dozens Of Hate Crimes On SF Asian Businesses Found To Be Out Of Custody

Authorities said Barreto is the man responsible for a string of 27 separate attacks, many in the Ingleside neighborhood, Chinatown, and in the Ocean Avenue corridor, that haunted business owners between April and August of last year.

“His target was the Asian community. So what would have happened if any of those victims were inside the stores and tried to defend themselves? This could have easily escalated into something much worse,” said former San Francisco Mayoral candidate Richie Greeberg.

It is a 567% increase but given the population size of San Francisco, the rise in the numbers doesn't seem too alarming to me. Especially, take out that one guy responsible for 30 attacks, the number is an increase from 9 anti-Asian attacks in 2020 to 30 attacks in 2021.

Of course, I'm not trying to discount these attacks or say anti-Asian sentiments have not increased due to the pandemic. And as the SF mayor is quoted as saying in the article, there may also be a substantial number of unreported crimes.

What the hell is going on in San Francisco?
    @pgabriel

They let a dude who was convicted of 27 attacks on Asians go free like he didn't do anything wrong

and then the Police Chief just dumps the DA cause he's WITHHOLDING EVIDENCE

It speaks volumes that the people attracted to the video by reading the comment section are literally spewing KKK rhetoric. I literally almost teared up reading some of those comments. They are horrible. I know you come here for your supposed comedy but this isn't funny dude.

I don't know what him being Indian has to do with it?

A lot of the new migrants(Easy and South Asians) who got here with money and skilled labor education are probably the most racist towards Black Americans even more so than most white conservative voters and a lot of it has to do with them not knowing the racial history of this country and make many assumptions.
