Chicago's problem is Gang fighting for drug territory. They don't kill the mainly White customers (bad for business), they kill other gang members and innocent bystanders (black). It is specifically an ECONOMIC problem. Lack of Jobs and opportunity. The Cartels are getting the drug to Chicago. How about stopping the flow? Where is the DEA?
I dont want to wade too far into whatever pissing match you guys have going on, but from your link: Total crime, the row there at the botton very clearly states down 5.5% through June relative to the same period last year. I would describe that as a little misleading, as it weighs murder equally with much more frequent and less serious property crimes, but the link you provided bottom-lines total crime -5.5% relative to the same period last year. Sam is right that across the board crime rates in NYC have been on a massive steady 30 year downtrend. 2020 might end up being a slight uptick relative to 2019, but those numbers still looks great relative to the averages of the last 10 years, more so the 10 years before that, and even more so the ten years before that. If you were a career NYC cop who retired in 2020, the crime statistics would be mindblowingly amazingly low relative to what they were when you were a rookie.
Since 1990 crime has gone down in New York City. As the murder graph that Sam posted also illustrates.
@Ottomaton my point is the crime is up significantly than in the past. Sam’s vague statement leaves a lot for interpretation. Shooting crimes are astronomically high..
That graph was a total lie and intended to deceive. Shootings in 2020 are on pace to DOUBLE those in 2019. Shame on you @SamFisher. Can't be trusted. The New York Post reports there have been 821 shootings so far this year, whereas there 466 shootings in 2019, at this point, and 449 shootings at this same time in 2018. The total for 2018 and 2019 combined at this same point is 905, so there is a chance the 821 shootings thus far in 2020 could grow enough to overtake 2018 and 2019 totals before the end of the year. Moreover, there were 1,099 shooting victims at this point in 2018 and 2019 combined. There are already 1,000 shooting victims in NYC in 2020 alone.
Rate of violent crime in NYC is literally half that of Houston, btw. Even Chicago with its pretty much free fire zone on the West Side isn't nearly as bad with homicides as places like New Orleans or St Louis. But, if you're a 50 year old white guy whose only info is a VHS of New Jack City, you probably think its pretty dangerous!
New York is totally screwed, led down the toilet by Democratic policies. People who are able to leave (taxpayers) aren't returning to the cesspool that is NY. People aren't going to commute to Manhattan anymore, which will drain a huge tax source from the city. City services will then be cut, decreasing the quality of life for the low-income residents. Their futures will become even more challenging. Thus prolonging the vicious circle that is created by Democratic policies... It ends in poverty and dependence on the government. Judge a policy by its RESULTS, not its intentions. How can people still vote Democrat after seeing how liberal policies have totally ruined cities all across America? Now you know why Democrats have to start race wars to win elections... to distract from their awful policy results.

I don’t know whether progressives in general are worried, but the ones at the Times sure are. This Times article focuses on the success of Eric Adams in the Democratic mayoral primary. The Times frets that the winner of the race (at least in terms of the popular vote) “focused much of his message on exposing progressive slogans and policies that he said threatened the lives of ‘Black and brown babies’ and were pushed by ‘many young, white and rich’ people.” That’s hitting awfully close home for the New York Times. The Times acknowledges that Adams’ message resonated with Black and Latino voters, constituencies upon which Democrats depend. It quotes Hakeem Jefferson, a Stanford political science professor. In Jefferson’s view, there’s a disconnect between these voters and the Democratic left. Says Jefferson, “the middle black voter is not AOC and is actually closer to Eric Adams.” Bernie Sanders, who unsuccessfully courted black voters in two separate campaigns, would probably agree, at least privately. The Times goes so far as to say that the success of Adams, coupled with polls showing the “disconnect” between the views of Blacks and the Democratic left on matters of crime and policing, “threatens to undermine a central tenet of [Democratic] political thought for decades.” It seems to agree with Adams that “if the Democratic Party does not recognize what we have done here in New York, [it’s] going to have a problem in the midterm elections and. . .in the presidential elections.” But are Democrat politicians willing to suck it up, abandon “a central tenet of their political thought,” and get behind the police? Maybe, at least in terms of rhetoric. But if they do, they will face plenty of pushback from the hard left. The Times quotes a member of the leftist “Working Families Party” who seems to accuse Adams of using a racist “dog-whistle” on crime. This, despite the fact that Adams is black. Because Adams is black, and an ex-cop to boot, he can take this kind of inane criticism. But can Joe Biden? Can most liberals? Possibly, but they would much rather not.
Then why does it have half the crime rate of Houston? And be more specific? What policies? Understanding your ideology I'm assuming you believe we need more incarceration because you know 4% of the world's population resides in the US and 24% of the world's prison population also resides in the US. We definitely need MOAWR INCARCERATION.
NY is very safe…Isn’t it the safest large city in America by a noticeable amount? I remember seeing that somewhere I feel comfortable walking around many parts of NYC late at night, but I have street smarts As for Chicago, or more specifically the Chiraq parts, I’ve never been there and definitely not planning to ever go there, but I wouldn’t even stop at the red lights if I was there at night.
