Health Insurers Forced To Cover Rapid COVID-19 Tests Even Though They Don't Know How
While the rule is set to go into effect this weekend, companies are scrambling to figure out how to cover or reimburse people for the tests.

    https://reason.com/2022/01/14/healt...ovid-19-tests-even-though-they-dont-know-how/

    excerpt:

On Monday, the Biden administration announced that it would require private insurers to cover the cost of at-home COVID-19 rapid tests. The mandate is set to go into effect tomorrow. While it has been criticized for its likelihood to lead to shortages and higher costs, health insurers are running into another problem: They don't know how they'll follow the new rule.

According to New York Times reporter Sarah Kliff, health insurers are struggling to develop some way of implementing the new rule. Health insurance systems are set up to process medical billing codes that correspond to particular services or procedures; they are not equipped to cover or reimburse retail purchases. As Kliff reports, the best advice that insurers can offer most customers is to simply save their receipts, and the boxes the tests came in, to file for reimbursement at an unspecified later date. As one insurance broker characterized it, "There will be some people who buy them, and then have a six-month nightmare trying to get reimbursed."

All told, some insurance companies say that it will take weeks before they are completely ready.

The insurers' response underscores the clearly disorganized way in which the rule was conceived. The Biden administration is offering a solution that does not have a straightforward method of implementation. Coupled with widespread vaccination, easy access to rapid tests is a critical component of ending the COVID-19 pandemic. This is as true today as it was over a year ago, as Americans waited for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to finally approve a rapid test for at-home use—an approval that finally came more than eight months into the pandemic, yet still required people to get a prescription.

There is no sugar coating that this was a bad week for the Biden Admin. and it doesn't look like it will improve quickly. The message I'm seeing coming out of the Biden Admin. is to largely ignore the polls and to not look at the short term. While that is costly in the moment and there is no guarantee things will work out for them in the longer term I think that is the right strategy.

Getting voting rights bill passed was always going to be tough especially since it required a major change to the filibuster. While Manchin and Sinema have been the most public stumbling blocks there are reports that other Democrats weren't that comfortable with doing away with the filibuster either. It's slim but there still are possibilities for some form of voting rights passed.

BBB is in trouble but not dead as it can be passed through reconciliation. I get the feeling with the pressure of election this spring some form of it will get passed.

Omicron is largely out of Biden's control but even though there was a blunder with getting tests out the Admin. does now have a plan to get tests out. While the Admin. suffered a defeat on a mandate for large companies they did win on the mandate for health care workers which is very important in the fight against the virus. Also Biden might just luck out as it appears that Omicron burns itself out relatively quickly. A month from now the situation might appear very different.

Inflation is possibly harder to address than all of those as it's both global and the means to combat some of the other issues exacerbate that. While there is little Biden can do especially in the short run the Admin is taking steps to address problems with the supply chain. It is possible that Biden might luck out on this also might just be a matter of waiting for Omicron to burn out and the rest of the Globe to open up more.

A lot of people complain about governing based on polls but will then point to polls to say how bad and doomed an Admin. is. For Biden this is one of those situations. Things are certainly bad for his administration at the moment but a lot can change even before the midterms.

Voters must have believed Biden moreso than they believed Trump.

"We will push onward with new medical frontiers," Mr. Trump said. "We will come up with the cures to many, many problems, to many, many diseases including cancer and others.

Of course. Trump ooze bs while Biden has a personal stake in this and has gone through the horror. After losing his son to brain cancer, Biden was tasked to lead the "Cancer Moonshot" and started the "Biden Cancer initiative". Everyone knows it's a long shot (moonshot) to curing cancer but one thing we should all know is Biden would make it a priority. Making fun of this is the norm for the usual suspect.

Listening to Mitt Romney on Meet the Press and he outlines a profound divide on how America viewed Biden and one of the reasons why he is having so much problem. Romney while one of the most prominent Anti-Trump Republicans is still a Republican who in general doesn't agree with much of Biden's agenda. He does though seem willing to work with Biden and just not oppose him simply because of partisan division. What he's saying is that for many Biden was simply seen as a return to normalcy and not as someone who would transform the country. On the other side many Democrats were looking for this presidency to be transformative and Biden has been torn by trying to address that.

As it is Biden is unable to really satisfy either the side that just wants a return to normalcy or for transformation because there is no consensus among the country itself what way this country should go.

Anyone that thought of Biden as much more than a placeholder was already off to begin with.

This was always about an alternative to orange and stopping the bleeding. It's clear that has been accomplished and if biden needs to run again to whoop orange ass again he will.

The point was to get away from orange and so far so good thanks to fb and twitter for silencing and censoring his ass

I haven't seen Romney willing to vote for the For the People Act or the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. In fact, I haven't heard of him coming out for any part of either one. What I have "heard" from Romney is silence. I haven't seen him coming out for voter reform, when it's perfectly obvious that in numerous states Republicans are doing everything possible to suppress voting rights, enable GOP majority legislatures to overturn vote counts as was attempted in Georgia during Biden's election . . . in short, besides warping the outcomes of elections such as those coming up in 2022, there is an effort now to enable someone like trump to literally steal a presidential election.

Where is Romney speaking out for voting rights reform? There is an assault on our democracy going on right now and Romney is absent from the effort to do something about it. His talk is cheap, in my opinion.

More to the point, where is he saying he will vote for anything of significance?

I don't expect Romney to support new legislation on voting rights nor claim that he would. As stated he is still a Republican and doesn't agree with most of the Biden's agenda. What he is though isn't someone like Hawley who is just completely opposed to the Democrats out of partisanship and ideology and he isn't Cruz or Graham who are so desperate for power and relevance they will oppose Biden simply to please the extremes of their party.

I think Romney has identified why Biden is struggling with not just Republicans but also independents and his own party. Romney was never an open supporter of Biden but it should be pretty obvious he welcomed the change from Trump and was one of the few Republicans to speak out forcefully including voting to remove Trump from office against him. To the extent that Biden isn't Trump he can accept him and much of the country supported Biden because he wasn't Trump and not because they expected a transformational President along that would pursue an agenda like LBJ or FDR.

BBB was Biden most aggressive agenda during his campaign. Was the BBB ever considered as transformation? I didn't think so. I don't get where the transformation label came from and if that expectation is even true.

    PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN’S FULL STATEMENT
Here’s Biden’s full statement on the hostage situation that ended late Saturday in Colleyville.

“Thanks to the courageous work of state, local and federal law enforcement, four Americans who were held hostage at a Texas synagogue will soon be home with their families. I am grateful to the tireless work of law enforcement at all levels who acted cooperatively and fearlessly to rescue the hostages. We are sending love and strength to the members of Congregation Beth Israel, Colleyville, and the Jewish community.

There is more we will learn in the days ahead about the motivations of the hostage taker. But let me be clear to anyone who intends to spread hate—we will stand against anti-Semitism and against the rise of extremism in this country. That is who we are, and tonight, the men and women of law enforcement made us all proud.”

I think the context described here makes a pretty good case that Biden is healthier politically than the mainstream media would lead you to believe. Because progressives who want full blown transformation are and will more and more want this president to do more so they will say in a poll they disapprove. However that does not mean that the most liberal voters in America are suddenly Trump voters.

I do think that Biden has risks though in re-election, but it's not from progressives. It's from socially conservative Hispanics in key states, and those sliver of "independents" who will vote based on economic FEELING and say to themselves that because the economy feels better when a Republican is in power, it must be because of the Republicans policy.... which we all know is not true, and often Democrats just inherit Republican spending shortfalls with tax cuts against the deficit with no economic investment in their terms with spending bills on things that create a higher standard of living and jobs.

If you take a step back from it all, the accomplishments so far, if they were framed by the media the way that FoxNews would frame Republican legislative victories, would be pretty damn transformational:

-Cares act: lifting child poverty, Vaccine deployment, etc.
    -Getting out of Afghanistan
-1 trillion dollar Bi-Partisan Infrastructure plan (most presidents NEVER get this kind of bill passed)
    -etc.

Biden, if his presidency ended today, would already be more successful legislatively than Trump, Carter, and probably W. Bush. You could probably even argue that because his policies aged so poorly, and he benefited from a good economy, that Biden could be more successful than Clinton.

But yeah... Biden is not a sure fire bet to win re-election because of many factors... mostly because of the global Covid economy which isn't his fault but he'll be expected to be god-like to independent swing voters who will blame the president for not turning salt water into TX Whiskey.
