ICYMI: I was quoting a Hungry Like the Wolf line right before where you’re saying of “flat” discord note is. They prime us for it with the line I quoted.

Yes Substance is a compilation album of all of their singles plus the associated B sides with some versions different than others that were on albums due to being remixed. I agree that New Order is better than Duran Duran but I think it is close with Depeche Mode. However, you guys are forgetting about OMD. They belong in this conversation and were just as influential as New Order, Depeche Mode, and Duran Duran.

One other thing I'll say and was going to say yesterday but I wasn't in the greatest frame of mind to do a long post on it - Roxy Music and especially Japan were hugely influential on both of these bands but especially on Duran Duran. Just look at the cover of Japan's album, "Gentlemen Take Polaroids" and you would think that you are looking at Nick Rhodes on the cover but it is actually Japan's lead singer, David Sylvian who was a big influence on Rhodes' look - something that he admitted to later on in DD's career.

Another thing to add here - Depeche Mode is really a synth pop group and Duran Duran started out as synth pop but moved into the New Romantic phase (Ultravox was another band that went from synth pop to New Romantic). But I have always considered Depeche Mode more in line with Yaz, Human League, Yellow Magic Orchestra, later era Kraftwerk, OMD, Heaven 17, etc than to be like later era Roxy Music, Ultravox, Naked Eyes, Spandau Ballet, and of course Duran Duran. However, synth pop and New Romantic are both subgenres of New Wave music. But comparing the two, in my opinion, would be similar to comparing Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers to Weather Report. They are both jazz groups - but one is a hard bop group and the other is a jazz fusion group. Or comparing AC/DC to Slayer - they are both rock bands but AC/DC is hard rock and Slayer is heavy metal, specifically thrash metal.

Getting projects done today so a lot of music in the background.

Trying to create a versus format going unplayed hit for hit, but honestly, Depeche Mode is starting to take over.

Edit: Original Depeche video was pulled.
Damn SME, give us some way to share it lol. Post it in Vevo

    Late to this.

I was a huge Duran Duran fan and never really got into Depeche mode.

This is my all-time deep cut for Duran Duran I loved this song.

I felt things listening to Duran Duran, The Relfex always pumped me up as well as Rio, something to be said for a great pop song that just makes you want to sing along.

Yes the lyrics often time made zero sense but the music was great.

To close this one out, we'll do justice to Duran Duran with a live performance as well.

This is a great live version of this song, Rest in Peace Lamya Al-Mugheiry (also from Soul II Soul) who crushes her vocals on the track.

Agreed about OMD. OMD started out in the 70's looking up to Kraftwerk an then when they toured Germany early in their career, Kraftwerk was in their audience. Turns out Kraftwerk were big OMD fans and were being influenced OMD. OMD was a big early influence on Depeche Mode. We tend to shrug them off in the States, but in England they were huge. Vince Clarkes love of OMD. is what pushed DM into synth pop in their early years.

for the topic of discussion though..I'd take Depeche Mode over Duran Duran easily.

to me this is still their best song - highly underrated

The first 5 OMD albums are absolutely brilliant. It took me a loooooong time to really get into them and appreciate them; they are now one of my most essential music artists. "Dazzle Ships" is an album that I usually have to listen to in its entirety at least once a month.

Depeche Mode is still killing it, I saw them on their last US tour and it was like a religious experience. I love Duran Duran too, but I would pick DM over them. Count me with those that say these 2 bands aren't that comparable.

Hell Yes! OMD >>>> Duran Duran, too. :D OMD was another pillar of 80's new wave music. So In Love and If You Leave got pretty legendary play back then. It makes me miss the 200+ CD's I lost (actually were stolen) in a move. It also makes me reminisce again about making runs to SoundWaves and Record Rack off of W. Alabama & S. Shepherd.

This thread is still going cool. Looks like the poll has settled in with more votes.

Bonus, A sold out stadium in Berlin, almost 25 years after the song was made.

Yes. One of the top 5 DM songs for sure. Like the the albums up to violator more than the albums after. Their music got too F'ing depressing.

like Duran Duran but they are not at the same level. The best Duran Duran song wasn't even their own.

After 35 or so years, I feel vindicated :D :

    From : https://ew.com/music/2017/03/23/depeche-mode-dave-gahan-songs-interview/

We were using all these tape loops to create rhythms and the technology was quite advanced, but it wasn’t anything like it is today, the things that you can do. We used to go into studios, and the first thing we’d do, we’d ask where the kitchen was — literally for pots and pans and things that we could throw down the stairs, and record the rhythms they would make crashing around, and then make it into loops.
