Raw? What? Bessie Smith? "I need a little sugar in my bowl, and I need a little hotdog between my rolls."
It wasn't a natural progression from the McGuire Sisters, so decided to play it safe and put a spoiler around it.
Duran Duran was still making bad ass hits 10 years ago. Depeachy Mode? No so much. I will say that my favorite Depeche Mode song was Blasphemous Rumours. Heard that in London in 93. Hated the lyrics, but loved the song. Here's several they did just a decade ago. And much like AC/DC, their music is still classic Duran Duran.
And I'll say the "Hungry like the Wolf" got me into music. I loved memorizing the words, but there was a flat note in the chorus that made me understand there were far more than 7 notes. That note still does something for me; and my son obviously feels the same as music goes. Considered to be the first actual MTV movie video. The note I heard as a child that I loved was the flat note right after "I'm after the hunt. I'm after you." I was 11. And that made me love music.
I was up until 90 tuned out of DD and DM, I was into 70s Led Zeppelin, Rush and head pounding Metallica Ozzie Van Halen Iron Maiden ect had no time for that bubble gum pop ****. Driving from Austin to San Diego, I had came home to pick up my car, I grabbed what I thought was my CD case to find out as I cross into New Mexico with the moon making the desert glow and having an itch for some Ride the Lighting. I reach into the cs case in the passenger seat and drop the CD in. I am greeted by the sound of hungry like the wolf!?! Where did this come from? My sister was messing with my CD again! Turns out I grabbed her CD case and not mine, with nothing else on the radio I blasted that album and found it exciting and became a fan. I have seen DM in concert 4-5 times and loved every show, I never saw DD live. DD is fun and DM is great when making out with a chick. From there it’s Nine Inch Nails and Janes Addiction. I still have great memories of that drive thru NM and AZ at 110mph in the middle of the night with just the glow of the full moon with the TTops off and that album playing.
Substance was a complete game changer for me. I remember thinking I had never felt what I was feeling when listening to it.
Whatever version they played on Sirius xm, the bass line was insane. I think this might be it or probably just instrumental. Can’t get enough of this song.
duran duran probably better represents 80's culture but id take depeche mode. i was (and still am) more of a cure/new order fan, but i liked them too back in the day...but had not payed any attention to them since the early 90's violator era. but i saw them at austin city limits back in 2013 and they were fantastic - they had a full band with an awesome drummer and martin gore playing guitar in his leather daddy outfit. singer still sounded great. i was really impressed.
I ****ing HATE that hungry like a wolf song. But I ****ing LOVE that, come undoneeeeeee song. Who do you neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed. Who do you love?????????????????
