I actually don't think it was fair to fire him...but that's more about how crappy the team was. Bill Belichick might have been able to squeeze one more win out of this team... Still, he didn't do anything that inspired confidence or enthusiasm. Now time for the Texans to pass on all the best candidates for another yes man I suppose...
My thoughts: I sort of feel bad for Culley, but considering the situation I think the Texans hired him knowing he wouldn't be a long term guy. I think that's why they only signed him 2 years. I also think he knew that when he signed but it was an opportunity to prove himself/be a head coach, which he had never achieved. So with that said, I don't feel TOO badly for him. This is probably what he expected, just a year early. Much more glad they fired Tim Kelly. I know there have been personnel issues and he hasn't had much talent to work with, but I feel like if he was really the guy the offense would have shown SOMETHING by now. To those thinking that a Flores hire might mean Watson stays with the team...would the team even want him back at this point? After all the emphasis this front office has always had on character (and perceived character), Watson's situation seems like one they would want to sever from as much as Deshaun EVER did, after all the details of the court cases came out. I'm pretty sure they are committed to trading him, and probably telling every coaching candidate that same thing. But as others mentioned, the potential package we get in return could be a selling point on the job.
Culley is who he is. It says EVERYTHING about this organization that they even hired him to begin with. What a PATHETIC organization!!
If Caserio thinks that Flores is the right hire, I trust Caserio. I'm happy there will be no fake Rooney interviews in that building this year. I really hope they keep Lovie though. Look for Tim Kelly to be the oc in jax when Billy O gets that job lol
As strange as it sounds, it could be that the success Culley had this year is what led to his firing. If Mills and the rest of the team improved next season under Culley, then it would have been even harder to fire the guy. I have to admit that team looked much better this year than what I was expecting. But, the fact that Culley basically punted on a third down, points to him not being a capable head coach. The Texans of course handled this horribly. This isn’t the way a competent organization does things. At this point I have have to wonder about any coach that would want to come to this franchise.
I honestly don’t see how it’s not Flores at this point. Not my first choice, but it seems the plan is to do a full court press on keeping Pep around as the OC, which I would love for Mills. Flores being hired =/= Deshaun staying, he’s still going to be traded
