A few thoughts:

I believe in giving guys a second chance. That’s why even though KPJ was known for being a head case and throwing sh#t in the Cavs locker room, it was worth kicking the tires for a 2nd round pick. But now he’s repeated similar behavior; actually even worse behavior because he ran out on his team. He’s not good enough to get away with this. I honestly think you either cut him or bench him until he earns back his team’s trust. But you don’t play him anytime soon.

as for Wood, our best opportunity was trading him on draft night. I understand we were still trying to figure out fit, and the talent is real. But I think it’s clear that he just doesnt have the head or the heart to be a really good nba player. I think bailing on your team like that is a killer. I think his value is extremely damaged and I don’t think we can get anything but a late 1st for him now…which is not nothing, but certainly less than what we would have gotten earlier in the season.

lastly, I think we have a serious culture and leadership problem on this team. The coach has to set the tone and culture. I don’t think you can allow players to act this way without laying down the law and setting an example. I think it’s very clear that Wood is not good for the team culture. He’s 26 and doesn’t even have the excuse of being young and immature. Trade Wood (keep him benched till it happens). Bench KPJ until we see if he can earn back his team’s trust (and if not just cut him -he doesn’t have much trade value anyway).

at this point Silas has a lot to answer for and we should strongly consider a coaching change in the offseason.

A strong coach is going to call his **** out like John Lucas. You think putting him under Gregg Popovich would help an individual like KPJ? He has clear mental issues that have yet to be sort it out. The greatest coach in the world would still have to deal with a kid with severe mental issues that need to continue to be addressed.

Porter Jr. is the common thread in Porter Jr's problems. You can't blame Lucas for making him mad by telling the truth regarding his play.

This isn’t the first time Wood has pulled this ****. There was a game earlier this year when he half-assed it, jogging around, camping at the three point line. This is becoming a pattern, he pouts when he’s not happy. In a way this is worse than walking out, because you’re actively sabotaging the team’s play on the court.

Character issues. Bad character guys with impure spirit. This isn’t new and why teams have stayed away. We knew Porter and Wood aint it. We knew all along.

 

Feels like the rebuild took a step backwards.

 

I’m not buying the narrative that having a coke habit in the 80’s undermines Lucas’ credibility with the players.

If anything it adds to it as a cautionary tale that turned his bad choices into good works over his career.

 

He didn’t have to inform them he had no desire to play.

Lucas saw it with his first half effort and called him out.

He just went ahead and openly admitted it and removed all doubt.

 

Feels like a step forward to me.
