The need for a true PG is drastically overlooked.. People's common rebuttal is " There are none " or " We need scoring"... In today's NBA , scorers are mostly isolation players, which we have.. Passing isn't a natural skill for the ones we have.. I believe @JayGoogle (?) alluded to this in a post a few minutes ago... Instead of taking these undersized bigs with all these mid- late rd draft picks , why not take a PG and take the time to develop him .. We have enough wannabe scorers and wannabe playmakers on this team as presently constructed.. Even if he isn't your eventual starter, having a pass first PG to orchestrate will do more for a winning franchise than another combo guard IMO... Not wasting time on why KPJ ain't the answer but he's not.. I love him as the potential 6th man tho.. I just don't understand why GMs have totally given up on finding the next Kyle Lowrys via draft or Ish Smiths via FA.. Size is essential but having a pass 1st guard could be just a vital... We have too any guys that want to do the same **** IMO. Everyone in the starting 5 wants to initiate offense but seems to react a few milliseconds too late resulting in high turnovers when passing.. Pretty bad that Sengun seems to be the best passer on the team...
Because people want them to learn NOW and piss all over those that have played less than 50 games total. DD
This honestly is what I see with this team. No roles. 5 guys trying to score when they touch the rock outside of KJ and Sengun, everyone is trying to get theirs. I wish we'd see more old school PGs like Lowry or even CP3. Dudes that want to set up the offense and run a good offense instead of being score first. So many score first guys running about trying to be Curry. I feel like Green would really benefit with that kind of guard. It's not easy to find since a lot of these guys that aren't score first PG are that way because they can't shoot, but I guess we'll see what Stone will pull off. Even if we agree that KPJ is the PG of the future (I'm not so sure) we still need another PG to back him up. I mean, it can't be Agustin in the long term obviously. We're super thin at PG that we really only have one on the roster...not counting the dude sitting out for the season and waiting to be traded of course.
We went through one draft after Harden blow up. And we did draft Christopher. If we would have had the first pick, Cade would have been our PG
How many guys have come into the league not a PG and later became a successful one? The number has to be exceedingly low. Now, how many of them have done it while not having high BBIQ like KPJr? Rockets don’t necessarily have to draft one, but they shouldn’t be trying to force a guy like KPJr into being one
Cade would’ve been amazing…poised, tremendous BBIQ, and already displays good leadership qualities and maturity
Good point guards take longer than a rookie contract to coach up. If NBA players are getting into the league at age 19-20, it isn’t until 25-26 that they really come into their own. With that in mind, it’s way better to pay the PG on his second contract than his first. Either trade or sign that guy as the cherry on top to instill discipline into an otherwise talented team. It’s like a baseball team tanking and then finally shelling out a bunch of cash for a good bullpen to flip the switch into contender status. Phoenix did exactly that when they traded for Chris Paul. That’s the template we should follow. Draft talent, make stupid mistakes in each game that lead to close losses, keep tanking and accumulating draft capital and finally when you think the team’s ready to flip the switch, get that CP/Rubio steady hand PG to show the team how to win.
I think it's more than that... I can only speak for myself but.. 1) Our players have talent ... Some are really offensively skilled.. But they're either in a conversion situation because they're tweeners ( KPJ, KMJ, and Tate) or have similar skills sets ( I believe you've indicated this yourself).. 2. kPJ has been in this league long enough to know where he would thrive best for this presently constructed team.. He can learn that PG role while playing 6th man... I'm on record as saying I think he the potential to avg 15/5/5 whether he plays 28 mpg or 38 mpg... Quit handling him with kid gloves and put his ass where he's most effective... 3. People have extreme patience for project frontcourt players and combo guards but not a pass first PG ... If that pass first point guard don't develop a reliable shot quickly , his ass will be in China the following year... But that combo guard can brick his way to a second contract because of his scoring "potential".. Not cause his ass can shoot efficienly.. Scoring potential is why the NBA game is horrible and they alter the rules every damn offseason..
KPJ has mostly started, something is really wrong here. 3. There is no Pass first PG on this team, other than John Wall and DJ Augustin who has scored more in recent times.
Point guard vs point forward vs the playmaker vs giving the ball to the best player on your team and let him be the point. These are all being implemented in the NBA. We have neither.
Agreed..My original post is the need to draft or acquire one and develop him. I would've preferred we got one instead of Garuba this past year.. I don't wanna wait 2 or 3 years from now and then the Rockets pull the cord on the KPJ as starting PG experiment ...
Front office has to somehow, KPJ is in his 3rd year technically so they have to figure out a new contract, his market value is not as high as some here would like it to be. I have no idea what he will become but I wish him the best no matter if he stays or not.
We simply didn't need to develop them when we had CP3, Harden, Lowry, Dragan, and even Lin as they came that way... but...
How many of these recent champs were lead by combo guards running the point besides Kyrie and Steph. Even still you're talking 2 of the most gifted scorers in NBA history that could pass as point guards if need be... That triangle bullshit of the 2000s is dead...
We haven't had the need to develop one in years cause Harden was that good at assisting. No matter what anti harden folks like to say and btch about harden being a ball hog, the man's seamingless transition into being the main playmaker/point guard won't b replicated anytime soon.
Most teams need a lot of scoring from their guards, so it is hard to win big with a point guard that is pass first unless they are exceptional like Chris Paul, who is honestly good at just about everything. The Rockets will need a good defender at the point guard spot to compensate for Green and someone that can run an offense because Green at this point really isn’t a combo guard. Ivey would be a good get for the Rockets if they end up with the 4th pick. Good defender that can score and is rapidly improving as a creator.
