Watched it last night w/ the wife. I thought it was good, not great. 7/10. I didn't dig all the new characters, but still enjoyed it.
They addressed the uninspired action sequences and pathetic writing in the movie? Are you talking about the "meta" commentary about how they never wanted to make a Matrix 4 but were forced to by the studio? That's not an excuse. If you can't make a quality film, step aside and let someone else try. Saying "well I wasn't even trying" after the fact isn't an excuse for failure. That's just a coping mechanism.
You may not like the film, but she made a film to state what she wanted to state rather than have another person butcher her vision. She reclaimed the themes of what the matrix stood for and rejected all the interpretations made later. That's why she made the film and I can understand that. Not everyone will. You want a quality film with good fight scenes and such. Maybe that's not what the filmmaker wanted - and it's their art form - their creation. You don't have to pay to watch it. But they wanted to set the record straight and they did. This movie was about explaining why the Matrix was made and what it stood for. That's why she did it. Again, why should she step aside and let someone further corrupt her creation? If the studio wants, they can reboot the whole franchise like you want to.
By this standard....no movie can ever be criticized. If I make a movie on my camcorder with some friends down the street and put it in a theater I can fall back on "it's my art form". The movie stunk. It lacked any of the appeal of the first movie, action scenes were boring, had terrible CGI, story was unfulfilling, etc. etc. etc. Simple as that. Just because "that was her vision" doesn't mean it was a good one. Now...if it had no relation to The Matrix? If she just made another movie under a different brand/franchise/etc? Sure, go for it and it can be judged on its own merits. But as a sequel to an iconic movie, it was terrible.
You can criticize a movie all you want, but saying the creator should step aside and let someone else make it because it didn't have cool enough fighting is a bit ridiculous.
One of the creators stepped aside becuase they knew they'd just end up putting out some uninspired BS that would flop and kill the IP. The other sibling just wanted one last payday and went forward with the uninspired BS. It wasn't just the awful action scenes, it was the pathetic writing and incompetent direction as well. They simply didn't have a story to tell, but they wanted that final payday anyway. It would have been far better for the random has been to step aside and allow someone who actually had a story to tell give it a go with their IP. That's not always a recipe for success.....we all saw The Last Jedi, but if the creator isn't going to respect their own IP, what difference does it really make if someone else might not? If anything, if both of the Wachowskis refused and the studio made a terrible 4th Matrix film without them, it would likely boost the original trilogy and their reputation as filmmakers. Instead, Lana put the final nail in that coffin.
You can make up whatever story you want if it makes you feel better. But the truth is out there if you seek it. Good luck!
You're the one here spinning things, making excuses for a bad movie. Not me. Like I said though, if you found a way to convince yourself that you enjoyed the movie, I think that's awesome. It's just too bad that almost no one else was able to do so. The whole "They intended to make a terrible movie" bit just doesn't move the needle for me. It sounds a lot like Tommy Wiseau coming out years later and saying that he ended to make The Room terrible for comedy purposes.....no he didn't, that happened accidentally and he's just embracing it as a coping mechanism.
I "watched" it last night. I have to say it is probably the worst movie I have seen in a decade, and incredibly disappointing. The movie is incredibly insulting to women....... which is interesting, considering that the movie was made by a man that transitioned into a woman.... left his wife and kids for his dominatrix. So "Lana" claims she was meant to be a woman, that she IS a woman..... yet the female characters are weak as hell, and they serve no purpose but to prop up Neo....... and then she threw the feminist a bone with the whole "Trinity can fly" BS..... it was so insincere. Lana, you are just a white dude that liked to play in your mom's clothes.
I saw this last night. Random thoughts: - Did not care one bit for any of the new characters...can't even tell you names of any of them. - Plot was pretty pointless..felt like 1/3 of the plot is missing at the end. After it was done I was just like......so that was it? - Rewatchability scale - 1/10
It might have elements of satire, but I wouldn't go that far. Lana sold out and took the easier way out. Even if it was satire, it has to be enjoyable or consistent to some audience. The fun or debate that made the original great was lost even though there are piles of material that have happened between the first one and this one. Just because the cultural themes from Matrix "happened" doesn't mean the debate or discussion is finished. It just grows and evolves. She just took the dumptrucks full of money and had a hobo stand in for Keanu for half the movie. I mean c'mon, are we supposed to believe the Neo we saw was the same Neo 20 (60) years ago like the way NPH tried to sell it? I really want to like this movie as a standalone, but there's not much to defend why this movie was necessary.
As a movie, it’s meh. But if they add this to The Matrix as Director Commentary, it would be hands down the best director commentary in the history of cinema bar none.
It was a silly movie. I think the motivations are pretty clear. I enjoyed some of the satire but overall, it's a forgettable movie. The Matrix was a great movie than didn't require a 2nd, or a 3rd, and definitely not a 4th movie. Some things should just end and never be forced to continue. Star Wars trilogy, Lord of the Rings, etc - they are just better to end and move on. The problem is that Hollywood capitalizes on nostalgia and fandom to deliver **** product over and over again. It's time people come to realize that there's a reason why extending things too far don't work. If you are going to reboot something or try to extend something - do it with something that was sucky the first time and could benefit from a reboot. Do it with something that isn't already known and beaten to death 50 million times. How many more spiderman reboots will we have? How many more batman reboots do we need? Did anyone actually think Dune was entertaining when you knew everything that was going to happen before you saw the movie? Why not do the 2nd and 3rd books for god sake vs continually rebooting the 1st? I groaned when they said they were doing a 4th Matrix, so for me, this was actually better than I expected because at least it made fun of itself. It will go down as the anti-sequel. And whatever, we all know that WB will reboot the series anyway with a different director and different actors so what difference does it make?
Just wait until there are programs out there sophisticated enough to produce a new star wars movie or new beatles song just from the content that is there from the past. However long that takes (30-40+ years) or you can play a part in a new matrix movie in vr based on a script spat out from a computer program. hop on with your friends and run through a story. juxtapose that to what your post says. yeah lol
Dear god that movie sucked. Let's reboot all of our fun things! Indiana Jones: nope LOTR/Hobbit: nope Star Trek: nope Terminator: nope Star Wars: nope Matrix: nope I'm sure the 4 new Avatar movies will be awesome.
