    stop lying

who had demonstrated to be a lousy national campaigner

she could have still beaten Obama for the 2008 nomination, if only she had run an average national campaign, such as entering in every Dem primary

the complacent/entitled Hillary campaign didn't bother to enter the first two primaries, Iowa and
both of which Obama won "uncontested" and building momentum, too much for the lousy Hillary campaign to overcome

Going Out to Eat in the Age of the Shrinking Menu
Higher food costs and staffing shortages are making for slimmer menus with fewer ingredients

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/restaurant-menu-food-costs-shortages-11639437261

    excerpt:

Diners catching up with their favorite restaurants might be finding fewer options on the menu.

Chefs who once planned exciting dishes for in-person dining say increasing food costs and staffing shortages are often limiting them to dishes that are practical and cost-effective. Many were preparing for a comeback after trimming menus for takeout and delivery at the start of the pandemic.

This year, 60% of restaurants reported reducing their menu size, according to Datassential, a food-industry market-research firm that studied more than 4,800 menus in the U.S. The menus at fine-dining establishments were hit especially hard, with the number of items declining 23% over 2021, says Datassential’s Sean Jafar, who studies menu trends. The consumer-price index for food away from home, which includes purchases from restaurants, rose 5.8% over the past year, the largest 12-month increase since 1982, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

Today’s restaurants are focused on reining in appetizer and dessert offerings. Pricey proteins such as tuna, steak and salmon are also harder to find at some upscale spots. “A lot of restaurants are trying to keep the quality, not quantity,” Mr. Jafar says.

I have noticed this. Yet another reason that has kept me from eating out as much as I used to.

I’ve noticed that too. I eat out and get takeout quite a lot. One because my schedule has been ridiculously busy but also because I want to support local businesses.

At some point people aren't going to pay for 20 dollar burgers that was nearly half that 5 months before.

Food costs being the Achilles heel for restaurants is nothing new. What has happened though started happening years ago though and isn’t a product of the pandemic era. Restaurants have just gotten better and gather shared knowledge of ingredient efficiency and freshness.

Having large menus means too many ingredients to keep up with which leads to relying on frozen items to increase they shelf life which leads to more prep, lower taste quality, and cooks that don’t cook certain items as much so they don’t cook them as well.

The restaurants that survive are the ones that have food efficiency to a science and have almost no waste. That’s a death nail for restaurants. I’m all for smaller menus too as a consumer because I know those items on that smaller menu are likely to be better quality and I’m not ordering something that they’ll be pulling out of the back freezer.

Yeah the pandemic is a factor for everything now but this isn’t a new trend. The pandemic just puts business adjustments and innovations on a fast track like in my business where we didn’t have the time to put off what was always trending but innovation was more slow moving.

The restaurants are packed here in Austin, it's the service that is the glaring issue.

Naw…I want every restaurant to have a menu that’s 25 pages long…and with pictures damnit! Why can’t I get a damned hamburger at that fine Italian restaurant? FREEDUM!!!!!!

I work in the equipment side of the industry. Getting equipment is hard enough right now (especially refrigeration). They have to become more efficient in their storage because if a walk-in goes down, they could be screwed for months. And like you said, there are absolute benefits to narrowing down menus and being good at fewer things instead of being mediocre at a lot.
