Couldn't make it all the way through, but it felt like Back to the Future II. Except I somewhat enjoyed Back to the Future II.

There wasn't enough story in this in combination with it repeating a ton of the story from the 1st. They could have leaned on of those but leaning on both made it mediocre.

In the first one they talked a bit after Neo got out. The kid who talked about the woman in Red Dress and what tastes like chicken. Just casual dialogue that can play into another level or foreshadow where the director's leading.

They could've did the same thing with Morpheus Jr. So you're a simulation of a simulation... Neo: TBH I made you like a bot and programmed my mentor and worst enemy into you. They're more your Daddy than me...

It's weird they spent time to open with Mo Jr. only to make him a joke or supporting role. It's almost like the beginning was an apology for not bringing in Larry Fishbourne. The movie could've had both and would be more interesting because of it

... What's the deal with the metal pebbles? How tf does it feel and how are you controlling it outside the room?

Just fun random dialogue that could either work or sound incredibly stupid without the suspension of disbelief.

They made Homeless Merovingian break the 4th wall but it could've easily been another random character in the trilogy giving Neo a soft landing between the optimism of the 90s to whatever tf we have now.

They glossed over it but I think it's one of the reasons why the original matrix worked and the others didn't. Normal folk doing the work of describing things over Nph or the architect in the white room.

It didn't kill the action, while it served as a launch pad for why the Resistance is fighting. In this movie, Neo only cares about Trinity, so at the end are we really expecting them all to fight for the same thing?

    Yeah, sure, I think, whatever

All we needed was Ted and the Grim Reaper and the movie would have been better

It was entertaining and interesting that's for sure. Was it a good movie - honestly not sure.

I thought they made it obvious that they didn't want to make this movie but did it because they didn't want someone else making it either. They totally trashed the movie business and culture for that matter, and really mocked all the right-wingers who embraced "redpilling" (which is ironic that the idea came from transgender directors trying to tell a story of a male protagonist breaking from from a patriarchal world to be more true to himself by embracing love and his more feminine side).

This movie is a cultural and political statement obviously, and not meant as a story to evolve a franchise but rather to kill it. On those fronts I suppose it's a success since given it released on HBO Max its hard to see a 5th one being made.

It definitely is a movie that didn't take itself too seriously, crapped on every man in a powerful position, and essentially was about celebrating women in power. Good for Lana Wachowski I suppose, and bad for men are victims movement (sorry @Bobbythegreat )

For me the coolest part was AI sims existing in the real world. That was pretty cool.

LOL, I'm glad you found a way to enjoy it.

If the plan was to kill the franchise, I think it was successful in that. So there's one thing it potentially did well.

The Matrix 4 was a slap stick comedy of itself (Matrix).

As one guy put it about the great simulation

Life has become one giant comedy of errors. Matrix 4 is no different.

Of course I enjoyed it. If you walk into any Keanu Reeves movie with high expectations you are doing it wrong.

The movie was a satire and was not meant to be anything more.

The ending was hilarious and cracked me up.

    "You came here to negotiate?"

"Nah, we just came to say hi - See ya!"

Fair enough....so the reason for the unispired action sequences, the pathetic writing, and the generally poor quality of the movie was becuase it was "satire"?

If the first movie decided to go for that instead of going for being a quality movie, there never would have even been a second one.

I think the more likely explanation is that it was just a terrible movie, which is why one of the Wachowski siblings refused to have anything to do with it.

In fairness though, like I do with all completely terrible movies, I plan on giving it a second viewing at some point to see if my first impression will be confirmed or if I'll look at this abortion of a film in a more positive way. Anything is possible.

Also, as to that last scene....if we look at it in the world of the Matrix, their actions would direcly lead to the peace between the Humans and machines ending and the machines killing everyone in IO. So, in universe, that scene makes them look like morons.

One of the most incomprehensible movies I can remember. A true embarrassment, and I say that as somebody who has The Matrix in their Top 5 films ever. Just awful.
