Yes, it would likely be a centerfielder or possibly one of the shortstops still out there. The Astros were linked to Marte and have had a lot of discussions with the Pirates for Reynolds and some with Baltimore for Mullins. The Astros have discussed Contreras with the Cubs but the asking cost is too high right now. I asked KG about Tucker or McCormick in centerfield and he said the Astros really didn't want to put Tucker in CF 120 times a year if possible.
Yes and the offense has upside as well...... Bregman hasn't been healthy the last few years and is capable of hitting 35-40 homers if healthy. We still don't know what the ceiling is for Tucker as he is just now blossoming and I know the Astros feel Alvarez has several gears he hasn't used yet. It isn't as simple as a topped off offense.
Not seen him play in a while, but anything on Ketel Marte (assuming he's healthy)? He use to be able to play CF and SS somewhat. Stats suggest bat is still good, but everything else that is speed/athleticism related seems to be way down.
No way he comes close to 150 innings off TJ IMO. We also need him for the postseason more than anything. I think he’s going to be on a pitch count and that six man rotation SHOULD be a thing this year. Also why I believe we keep Odorizzi. I like the offense and adding a bat makes sense to offset Correa production. If we knew he was leaving, I wish we chose to sign one of the better SP’s on the market. Peña at SS, trade for an OF… maybe I’m being too nit picky.
The whole Correa thing has been such a distraction. I hope we are way more focused on it than the front office. Like him a ton, if he signs great. But not for the future of the team. Move on. Sign some pitching. Trade for a CF.
I haven't heard much on him in awhile. I think his name was linked to the Astros at some point BEFORE last season. I do know that he is someone that is known to have some issues off the field and some focus problems. If I remember right he is under long term control so I am sure the Astros would have interest but I suspect (just my opinion) that Arizona would want a haul back.
Distraction to who? Nobody can do anything at this point anyways. The Astros made their offer and it’s not just sitting on the table waiting for him to accept or not.
ME! What can I say, I'm selfish. It was always gonna be this way, but I wish he had just signed somewhere before the lockout.
Is both a possibility? Say, we sign Story, and then trade one of Leon/Pena as the headliner in a deal for Reynolds or Mullins? Makes a lot of sense to me since Story would make one of them (definitely needed to get either one) somewhat expendable.
He's almost certainly gone. He's already thrown a temper tantrum, and I imagine there's bad blood between him and Dusty. That, and I bet he's upset about sitting out both Games 5 and 6 of the WS, even if he won't say it. Between McCullers, Verlander, Valdez, Garcia, Urquidy, Bielak, Javier, Solomon, Brown, and maybe another guy or two in AAA, we should be fine depth-wise, not to mention we can always sign/trade for somebody. I like having only players who WANT to be here, if possible. And @Nook says we are shopping him. Seeing what Matz, Cobb, DeSclafani etc. got and the need for pitching in general, I'm sure someone will trade something for him.
I think he is gone too. AND NEEDS TO BE 1) he signed a very club friendly deal to help keep the Astros under the luxury tax- but that deal has several escalators based on IP. He needs to start regularly to get full value on his contract. 2) Click has already stated the team's intention is to get Javier back into the rotation. Javier MUST be a priority over Jake. 3) with Verlander returning in 2022, Jake is AT BEST the #6 likely #7 starter. Last year he had the 7th best numbers of any Astros pitcher with 9+ starts. 4) In addition to the regular starters ahead of him, the team will have Hunter Brown and ( fingers crossed) Forrest Whitley who could ( should) pitch themselves into a potential rotation spot later in the season. 5) the complaining during the season and lack of usage in the playoffs are just writing on the wall.
Correa should be the first franchise guy we lock up long term. He finished top five in MVP voting and is entering the prime of his career. Just about every contending club has atleast one 200-300+ million dollar contract on their payroll. That trend will continue moving upwards over the next several seasons. And Correa is better than 95% of them. I like the starting pitching depth the Astros have on the 25 man (7 options) and there are promising options on the 40 man. If we didn’t sign Correa, I have no problem going after Rodon. But you still need to move one of Urquidy or Odorizzi regardless. So it doesn’t increase depth just talent (if he stays healthy). Forget about CF. Pedro Leon is the future. McCormick, Siri and Meyers are fine holding it down till he’s ready which could be in 2022. I’d say grab Correa and a top lefty reliever and call it a day. There’s going to be plenty available at the trade deadline.
I think starting pitching is just fine. I don't see a reason to bring in Rodon at $25mil+ AAV especially just to trade away Urquidy? I think if Verlander and McCullers can be healthy in the playoffs this team does not need anything more from the rotation. Framber, Garcia, Urquidy, and/or Javier can provide #3-#4 depth. I was playing around with a 6 man rotation idea. I used the actual schedule. #1) Verlander but always 5+ days rest. 30 starts: 25 on 5 days rest, 3 on 6 days, and 1 8 days ( AS break) #2 Framber: mostly 5 days but 4 days if makes sense for scheduling. 31 starts: 21 w/ 5, 5 w/4, 3 w/6, and 1 w/8 #3 McCullers: at least 5 days between all starts 29 starts: 23 w/5, 4 w/6, and 1 w/11( AS break) #4 Javier: bullpen experiment is over. 29 starts: 1 w/4 the rest between 5 and 8. #5 Garcia: 27 starts and a little bullpen time. #6 Urquidy: 16 starts and lots of bullpen time. Basically I entered Verlander in every 6 days ( 7 if the 6th was and off day) Then I put Framber behind him unless he could pitch before him on 4 days rest AND it allowed for better flow of the #3-#6 pitchers. Especially if it allowed to skip #5 or #6. Then I put McCullers in and gave him 5 days rest on every start. 6 if Verlander/andor Framber are already scheduled or day off on his scheduled day. Then I put Javier behind him and scheduled him the 1st opportunity on 4+ rest throughout the season Then I filled in any openings with Garcia and finally put Urquidy in all games where no other pitcher had enough rest to meet their individual requirements. This looks like a very sustainable rotation that allows for plenty of rest and recovery time for Verlander and Lance. If ( when) somebody has to miss a turn or 2 the others can simply go back to reqular rest or someone like Solomon or Bielak can take a turn. And it does not require Odorizzi.
My first post in this forum since that dreaded playoff format. Alejandro goes to the Branch! Also, I don't want home field in this next world series.
He turned down Detroit and $275 million. Chances are he’d take it (if its the best possible offer) in a different city.
Rangers and Tigers are the only two teams with mega money too spend and they’ve already spent on shortstops. He’s overplaying his hand. And waited too long. If the Astros land Correa for under 200 mil. Click should win GM of the year by default. I don’t see anyone that can afford too spend that much or being willing too commit that much on a guy who’s played 140+ games in two seasons years apart. Yankees payroll is at $210 mil they want to extend Judge, need rotation help, need a CF’er, 1B, etc. they are linked too tier 2 type guys like Simmons, Iglesias at SS. Phillies have a top five payroll more holes then they can spend too fix and would be better off on Story, Simmons, Iglesias. Maybe the Cubs but they wanted Javier Baez back but didn’t want too spend $175 mil for him. They aren’t going too buy there way past the Mets, Braves, Dodgers, Padres, etc and should be rebuilding.
Baez has only played SS in 52% of his career games, so it's not like Baez would be blocking Correa at SS. If they want to spend what Correa wants, they can still fit him in
