There are 552,000 homeless people in America.

Musk' net worth is worth 297 billion dollars. He cash in his net worth, buy a 200,000 house for all the homeless people in America, and still have 3 billion 110 million dollars a year to spend if he lived 60 years, without putting a cent in interest drawing funds or banks.

Wouldn't you do it if you could still be a billionaire the rest of your life?

I'd be homeless for a day to get a $200k house.

Isn't Deb a long-time republican who hates Trump?

In general, building more housing is a key element for reducing homelessness and alleviating the housing crisis. And a super small group of people are concentrating obscene amounts of wealth at an ever-accelerating rate. While the logistics aren't so simple as Elon building 500k houses (certainly not for 500k individuals as homelessness is a revolving door of people) I'd say the thread isn't so bad.:)

While it is certainly an altruistic goal, there is a lot more to homelessness than just the lack of a home and the seemingly simple task of spending X dollars to provide one.

Though it could certainly make a dent, especially with short-term homeless populations, pretty sure just giving them all homes (where do these homes come from, anyway?) isn't going to save all the homeless. And in many cases, for those in community shelters getting much needed support, it would actually be harmful.

Also, who pays the property taxes, electricity, repairs, and other costs of having these homes?

Finally, pretty sure if Musk tried to sell all of his Telsa stock to raise that cash, Tesla stock would crash and he'd no longer have $297 billion. Plus he'd have to pay capital gains taxes on all of it, eating up a chunk of that money.

Germans had a welfare state system that largely removed homeless and mentally ill off the streets, provide treatment/food/shelter, and allowed people to roam fairly safely a little past midnight.

But those taxes... I'm still sore from a year of pensions they skimmed off of me.

I'm sure the German members here will gripe about certain immigrants who mooch and refuse to integrate or even learn German, so it's a fine line that seems to veer all in one direction or another.

The only thing good about Musk’s obsession with blowing billions of govt subsidized funds on his mission to Mars is maybe… just maybe we’ll discover some sort of technology for atmospheric processing that we can just use to save our own planet.

Because even on earths worst day, it’s still a million times more hospitable than Mars’ best day. -225 degrees at night sounds quite delightful though. Enjoy Elon.

I saw that dumb movie and worst thing that happened to this planet was Jeremy Lin in the playoffs vs. Portland in 2012

Sorry, "we" won't be going anywhere, especially the old crusty polluted 99ers. Only the rich, young, and attractive will be permitted on earth 2.0

You'll be stuck to die here with Jerry Lin.

$200,000 in many places wouldn't build a home.
