[WAPO OPINION PIECE] The NBA pitches itself as progressive. But its stars won’t talk about vaccines.

I think this could have been true 6 months ago. But today? It seems to me that anyone who could be convinced of getting a vaccine has gotten one (or has made plans to), while everyone who doesn't is pretty set on that. I'm not sure that Lebron promoting it would change anyone's mind.

Is clicking the following button some massive time investment for people where following someone you deem as useless effects their productivity and usefulness in life?

This....... if getting vaccinated is "progressive", then we are ******.

Hell, George Washington was vaccinating his soldiers nearly 250 years ago.

Fair point. But again, it's easy for us to view the world through our own eyes. It's harder to imagine what it's like to be a person who takes their cultural marching orders from someone like Lebron.

There is no mandate on getting the vaccine. Not sure what you are crying about.

And also the idea that you shouldn't get vaccinated to let weaker strains dominate is quackery at best. That's not how things evolve and mutate.

There was a poll on this back in May or so by Morning Consult. Celebrities don't move the needle. I think it's a one-way street. If they promote it, nothing changes. If they speak against it, it reduces vaccination.

I think that accurately polling for this would be extremely hard to do.

If you ask a random sample of the population I'm sure Lebron would have almost zero sway.

If you ask 15-35 year old black males? I'm sure the metrics would be different.

(Coincidentally that's a demographic that we need to make strides with in terms of vaccination %)

Except if you are vaccinated, your chance of spreading it and dying from it is greatly reduced if you are vaccinated through every variant to date (we'll see the data on the new variant soon).

Dude, we have no control of the mutation. Unless you want us to engineer a mutation - yea, no.

It feels like there's some invisible hand stuff going on here.

Step 1) sell vaccine to industrialized world for big $$$
Step 2) minimize vaccine distribution in third world to allow for continuous spread and mutation
Step 3) create variant vaccine to sell to industrialized world

    Repeat, ad infinitum.

Sure, it's healthy to be skeptical of any polling especially about how the question is asked. At the same time, high quality poll do gives you some good indication.

I wonder if barbershop talk were positive about the vaccine, then there'd be more people willing to buy into it.

My ignorant guess is that it's effect is opposite against the players.

Well if a slave ownin Foundin Father poked his soldiers...

den I dun wanna know wuts right!!

Ignoring the fact that we can't peer behind the curtain of what they're asking and who they're asking it to...

1-2% increase is actually massive. When you scale that, it equals millions of people.

2% of the black population is almost a million people alone.

I was expecting to see increases, at most, of half a percent... and that's being generous. Realistic expectation was more like a tenth to a quarter. These numbers are actually extremely encouraging that we should be blasting celebrity vaccine promos everywhere.

If indeed it's 1-2% but that's well within this poll's 3pt margin of error.

That's a very loaded poll and seriously flawed for multiple reasons.

Also the conclusion is highly misleading.

You concluded that from the graph or actually looking at the poll questions?
