Are we just going to ignore the play of Garrison Mathews?

GM has been a difference maker for this win streak. He's setting a tone with his hustle/defensive positioning (charge magnet), that combined with Tate's hustle/toughness has been infectious for the starting 5. It's interesting because we use to get more defensive energy from our bench, but its been the opposite with these lineup adjustments. Fun times.

If Neck Beard can keep this up, we need to sign him long term.

Players Shooting Dashboard Closest Defender +10 | Stats | NBA.com

I gotta say the stats disagree with your idea of Mathews taking bad shots and I can't recall him taking a single shot that he really shouldn't have or that left me thinking WTF ?

According to the stats (3 point shots only) =

0-0 defender wearing his jersey kinda defense.

    1-9 closest defender 2-4 ft.

    7-18 closest defender 4-6 ft.

    5-8 closest defender 6ft or more (62.5%)

Outside of that he's had a couple dunks and a layup or two.

His shots come in the flow of the offense - the ball comes to him & those are shots he has to take.

It's kinda like Theis getting wide open 3's on a routine basis (10-29 , 34.5%) ..... He has to take them when he's that open.

Best thing to do ..... Don't feed the trolls.

He got what he wanted the moment the first person responded.

    Just ignore them.

I jumped on this bandwagon yesterday and I plan to remain here until he starts sucking. This guy has played like he wants to stay and it makes a difference. That's all we are asking for, hunger, show how much you care on the floor.

I am plesantly surprised G. Mathews is performing above expectations. The Rockets have the shooter they need just in case Eric Gordon or Armoni Brooks have an off-night.

Stone: Go ahead and take offers for Daniel Theis.

It's refreshing to have a 3 pt specialist / knock down shooter. That's what EG was before he forgot how to shoot. It's who I know Sniper Brooks is and hope he becomes (Lou Will lite)

Clips of his 3 point attempts from last night:

    https://www.nba.com/stats/events/?C...r Season&TeamID=&flag=3&sct=plot&section=game

    Observations:

    1. Dude is still automatic from the left corner 3 like I said yesterday. I just let the clips run and if I see him in that spot I know it's going in.

    2. I wouldn't say his shot selection is bad, however, his confidence in letting it fly coming off of a screen, imbalanced, is a bit too high. I think, over time, he'll either refine his shot and improve his body control or, at worst, add a pump fake and drive to the basket into his bag.

Right now he's doing what the team needs/wants him to do and that is make 3s. As long as he's not a total negative on the defensive end Mathews should continue to play heavy minutes. Hell, I wouldn't mind keeping him in the starting lineup and have Green come off the bench. Not only would that benefit Green coming off of a leg injury but also humble the rookie in knowing that this is a make it or break it league.

I like anybody who plays hard, hustles, sets screens, takes charges, and shoots well. The color of their skin is irrelevant.

Agreed. Could be a great teaching point. Mathews has more than earned his minutes, and I want to see how Green responds to this scenario.

Seems like a classic case of a late bloomer who just kept developing but went overlooked because of past narrative. I want him in the starting line up until he shows he’s not the guy he’s been these past 3 games, does so much well out on the floor

Opposing teams will get an updated scouting report on Mathews and Silas and the team will have to adjust accordingly. His % will dip but having him on the court makes the opposing team have to respect his shot and be aware of his location at all times, allowing more space and freedom for the rest of the team to operate. I hope that Mathews has a counter ready for a more aggressive defense that's going to come his way--pump fake dribble drive, pump fake and draw in another defender to pass to an open teammate, etc. Right now he's just trying to shoot his way out of closing defenses and I don't know if that's a viable/sustainable counter.

I'm ignoring his play as much as he ignores the second t in Matthews.
