Honestly, I feel you are biased against him. You say he fabricated the story of Daphne Dorman, yet her family has staunchly defended him and stood by him. So how do you think that's a fabrication? Are you saying she isn't real?

He doesn't rail against cancel culture, he doesn't tweet about it. It's not doing interviews about him being a victim. So how is he amplifying this? You say he is doing it intentionally - but how? Where is this megaphone he is using?

In fact, I think it's the opposite. He's responded not by talking about cancel culture but putting the focus back on the high school. He's stated that if his critics donate more money to the school than supporters, he'll decline the naming honor. It's turned this into a fundraising effort for the school. Sure doesn't sound like he's trying to make this about himself.

Most of his schtick is. Was another thread in the D&D on a comedian really necessary? No...but neither are any of his other threads.

I don't hate Chappelle. I didn't watch the special. I personally haven't found him to be as funny since he came back from the other stuff I've seen. Seems like his ego has gotten too big and he doesn't have to work for it as hard anymore. Good for him on his successes. I just found him funnier before he disappeared.

    Fabricated? Link?

The last special addressed the real life actual consequence of the response to his previous specials. I think you're missing the point - it certainly isn't a boogeyman.

I myself didn’t care for his special. I’m a fan of his standup but didn’t find the last one particularly great or funny. That’s just my opinion. That doesn’t mean there should be a push to have him censored. I can’t think of one culture in the history of the world where censuring artists turned out to be for the betterment of society. People in this country feel the need to nitpick and criticize other people a lot it seems and it is what it is. At one point people were very religious, now that has been replaced by some kind of “societal morality” that everyone must be in alignment with. I’m not really invested enough in Dave Chappelle to talk about this any further and D&D is a bit of a waste of time. Just my 2 cents. I would say it’s more important to find solutions to climate change, inequality, health care, making sure minorities have voting rights, and making sure Trump doesn’t come back in power due to an increasingly fractured democratic base stemming in part from PC nonsense. I would strongly suggest living in another country for a little while and observing American culture from the outside looking in.

I mean, the cancel culture people always have jokes that if you say the wrong thing about Jewish people more than any other group you will get outright banned. So I don't know about them getting comedy more or less than any other group. I think it's just that more people know where the line is. I also think there is a context here that's missing because Dave has now several times come after this very community. Even after swearing off off it he goes right back into it. I don't think anyone thinks Dave is an anti-semite, so it's taken more like a joke. It's like how some white comedians and joke about black people because no one is sitting there thinking they are racist...but Dave has said some stuff that implies he's transphobic or at the very least just doesn't understand.

He crossed the line with Trans people that much should be clear. I think when you insinuate that trans people are not their desired gender and say you are a TERF then a line has been crossed.

I get that he might not know what TERF means, I did say I wonder if he knew, but it's on him to know. He writes his jokes like anyone else does and it's on him to know what that term means and how others will see him after he proudly says he is one.

Watching his stand up it sounds like he doesn't understand Trans people one bit and that's likely a huge reason why the Trans community feels like he attacked them. I hope he follows through on his desire to speak WITH the community instead of at them and be better than some of the posters here and some of his newlyfound fans that were ready to use his comedy to go after others.

At the end of the day though, we don't get to decide what is and what isn't offensive to them or what should and shouldn't be offensive to them.

As for the "It's just comedy" I mean, that's a cop-out to me. Blackface and minstrel shows were just comedy too. If comedy feeds into a narrative that hurts people then it's a bit more than comedy. It's normalizing discrimination towards a group of people and he should have left the topic alone after saying he wants them to laugh with him...but then goes out and makes more jokes against them. At that point you can't blame trans people for being cross at him. At least I wouldn't.

I should add that as well or highlight this point.

If Comedy is just comedy and it shouldn't be filtered at all...then no one has any issues with minstrel shows returning? Right? After all, it's just jokes, people should get over it, right?

Or is there a line that shouldn't be crossed and can we reasonably expect comedians to not cross it?

My guess is not even Dave would agree and most comedians would understand. I'm betting Dave wouldn't stand behind a comedian telling racist black jokes. After all, all these comedians were happy to cancel Kramer after he yelled the n-word, people were in the crowd laughing, right? These comedians weren't there to save Richard's or Tosh's career since they seem so concerned with cancel culture you'd think they'd back the comedians who haven't been able to find work since having controversial stand ups.

In terms of knowing where the line is - when it comes to the trans community, I don't think the line has been established. Clearly he offended the community and clearly he crossed their line. There is no definition as to what is clearly offensive vs fair play. He's been accused of stating things he did not state. He did defend Rowlings for certain statements, and did say he is team TERF, but he did not address her more controversial statements.

He did say he would not make more jokes about the LGBTQ community until he can be sure they are laughing together. So the idea he keeps coming after them seems to be more of a perception vs reality thing. In Closer he was responding to criticism he received. But he has been quiet about the controversy otherwise.

The Trans community has every right to be offended at anything they want to be offended by as does anyone else. There are members of that community that have defended him including transgender comedians, so it's certainly not universal that he crossed that line though. It's not the same as dressing like a minstrel "sambo".

But I do think blackface is a great example to bring up. Because what has become the line is not people dressing like a "sambo", but anyone putting on any kind of make-up to look black.

So I think the question becomes to what degree should a comedian respect a communities sensitivities around certain topics, and to what degree should a community call for a comedian to be fired. I don't know the answer to those questions.

I hope there can be a way for the Transgender community to have a dialogue where they can seek to educate him more about their pain.

I really hope he sits back and thinks about it or look at the people that's also suddenly became fans of his. I really do hope he moves forward and if he does make more jokes about the 'alphabets' that he'll understand where that line is and what can be funny without being harmful or without furthering harmful stereotypes. That's really all I ask of him and other comedians.

I think comedians should be able to tell whatever jokes they want but they have to know edgy jokes are risky. It better be funny if its edgy or it'll just come across as an insult.

With that said, I don't think his actual jokes on that stand up were edgy...I mean South Park went harder against trans people but most people ignore Southpark because they truly rag on every single thing. I had more of an issue with the TERF thing because it wasn't even a joke moment and was during his 'let me be real' moment comedians have

Yeah, I'm not going to go point by point over his last specials because I don't fully remember them. It was only good, not great. All i remember was his last special was more a monologue than like his old routines, and there were cringey bits that portrayed trans (and women and jews and asians and whites lol) as freaks for the initial jokes. I did get his underlying message but he took more time to talk about that message that I don't feel like sitting through it again to unravel it. Nor do i feel like reading outrage articles to piece together where i might or might not agree. I'm just exhausted with trans awareness and would rather let time take its course with America openly accepting them.

I can tell you what recent bit of Daves I remember clearly though. 8;46 is a ******* work of art because he knew America didn't have the right person to speak up at the worst of times and he put his neck out there even more than that SNL monologue that he still complains getting **** on.

And that's my point. He can't freely squirm around the weight of that pulpit if he's using it for other messages without people questioning his controversial bits. While it is his and it is earned, he seems more stubborn with trans because he doesn't get violent reactions for it like he would with aggrieved conservatives (sneaky death threats to him and his family or worse...) or a sudden financial pullback with aggrieved liberals (will Dave get cancelled... as opposed to Dave will get cancelled)

I admit he did got some flack for his Space Jews joke or his previous Me Too jokes, but I doubt he's going to devote half an hour doubling down on that in a future show in order to prove a point.

Too risky...better to do that piecemeal.

Maybe I'll take it back but his career did seem to slide after making a rape joke and then telling a woman in the crowd it would be funny if she were raped. I think he still does stand up though but I don't know if he'll ever have a show or anything like that again.

I mean...I guess the question is anyone ever really canceled? Kramer has truly been canceled then you have people like Roseanne whose show was outright taken from her (but that was for tweets, not comedy) and Cosby of course for something entirely non-related to his stand up. So I guess canceling is a thing that happens but it's so rare. I can't think of many other comedians actually out of work for a stand up bit.

Kathy Griffin for her Trump thing?

His show went for 12 years and it was kind of one-note so him not getting another show would not be an example of cancellation.

I don't remember the joke causing a big ruckus in the 1st place which is why I asked in the 1st place.

Dave Chappelle is my favorite comedian of all time. He’s maybe not as skilled as some of the all time greats (Pryor, Rock, Carlin) but he’s sort of my generations best in class.

But I am free to say that he should let it go… and I’m free to call a spade a spade that he has intention to create controversy/dialogue. I imagine that John Lennon’s Beatles/Jesus comment was put out with intention as well. This isn’t some referendum on how everyone should go burn their Chappelle Show dvd sets. Mine will be staying and I’ll divorce my wife if she try’s to sell them at our next garage sale.

It’s just so crazy how people are soooooo ready to go to war over anyone daring to call out Dave on anything. His stand up bit was found to be hurtful to many in the LGBTQ community. That’s not my opinion. It’s a fact. It’s also a fact that there’s no evidence that Daphne was bullied online because she supported Dave Chappelle but Dave saying that her support of him is the reason why she got bullied into killing herself is problematic to me as a fan of his and I don’t think he needs to do that. He’s too good of a comedian for that.

Thats my right to have an opinion laid out pretty clearly. If you want to continue to act like I’m some sort of woke army nut go for it.

Yeah I think his character got too old for his target audience and disappeared in irrelevancy.

I liked his stuff ten years ago though

I liked the show, mainly for the clips his commentary was always hit or miss and he did push the envelope which I always liked, on further reflection, I can't believe he did not get cancelled with all of the gay skits.

I'm sure somebody "woke" got offended and came for him.

    This is your argument?

Why would a high school kid from DC be a contributing member on a Houston basketball site? What the hell could that matter about anything at all ever?

Getting more people than the attendance at a now 4-16 Rockets game? Is that an achievement?

Wow…the biggest surprise of all was that people somehow managed to get offended at what he said when it was clearly in jest. Tune in to your white comedians making fun of Asian stereotypes etc, or Dave’s other black parodies and you’ll find this wasn’t even as bad. Everybody just proved his point including some in this thread. It’s ironic because they’ve been the ones blowing it up.

why the **** should he let up when there’s a strong movement to cancel him for lighthearted humor? This inclination towards elevating one group above others is ridiculous I’ve never heard the ****ers here cry out like this for other groups.

The majority of people understand what jokes are
    But the fridge losers don’t

the next time a trans person gets attacked the police should ask the person who assaulted him what was in his Netflix queue

this cancel culture has gone too far

    @Roc Paint
This is the best response in this thread

I mean this is like blind people complaining about Stevie wonder at a stripclub jokes

anywhere Dave goes he will get sold out crowds because he’s the best at what he does

these dumb kids might be not be even the best sandwich artist at subway
