Lab leak seems more likely to me. We'll never get a smoking gun but if the two options are natural origin or lab leak, one seems far more likely than the other. WaPo reporter Josh Rogin does good reporting on covid origins.
The new variant might be here already. It's causing irregular heart rythm, fluid on lungs, hypoxic, full blown covid and then testing negative on the top accurate machine and this is on a 3 shot vaccinated person.

There already was an Alpha variant. Unfortunately viruses have a big evolutionary advantage that they are mutating constantly. It is looking likely that COVID will be endemic.

For shutdowns I don't think we will see the type of shutdowns like we did in Spring of 2020, not unless a new variant shows up that is much more lethal. In addition to having to balance the economy and that it will be politically untenable to maintain such a shutdown we are in a far different place than we were in 2020 fighting the disease. We have not only vaccines but now multiple treatments that appear to work. The challenge is getting people to acknowledge that this disease is real and a threat, getting vaccinated and maintaining enough resources in hospitals to deal with surges.
They don’t pick it up because it will destroy their narrative. Just like posters in here will not acknowledging more than a few people dropping dead and a lot of them were healthy athletes at their peaks. Why - there was no known covid cases in Africa at the time. 11/26/2021 - Biden ban travel for 7 countries from Africa. More than 30 countries have ban travel from South Africa and other countries from Africa due to the new variant. Agree to it or not, Biden and other world leaders ban travels from Africa due to a new variant of major concern. Trump ban was not based on covid. He has a prior history of trying to ban Muslim, so yes, he's rightfully called out as racist / xenophobic by some.
