I knew he was one of the handful of guys the Astros were looking at but I was surprised they went this high for him. There were a number of other teams interested in him, but feels like an over pay but he is another guy Miller and Gelles supposedly like a lot…. He has an elite pitch and is a high K guy on that pitch and gets a lot of ground balls so I’m guessing that’s why they want him… he also finished really strong. This signing also doesn’t really financially impact what they do going forward. They were signing a set up man regardless and expected to spend this amount or more.
I know their numbers look similar but Yimi doesn’t have near the stuff this guy does. This guy has an elite pitch and coaxes a lot of ground balls, he will do better with our defense. He would not be at the top of my list, but they have earned the right to The benefit of the doubt.
Neris has a really nasty split that is elite against lefties and he keeps the ball on the ground… he can touch 96 with his fastball and throws a sinker too that is okay. In short he has higher upside with better pitch planning.
I hate nobody I didn't like the Baez or Castro moves last year and I dont like the Neris move this year. What was wrong about me not liking the Baez/Castro moves last offseason?
I look at the past as a reference to what's most likely to happen in the future from a 32 year old reliever.
Neris keeps the ball on the ground a very strong 48.9 percent ground ball rate paired with a very strong 31.6 percent strikeout rate netted him a very solid 1.4 rWAR.
Astros have a standing 6/210 mil offer too Correa that they probably won’t budge on and at this point I’m becoming increasingly optimistic it might seal the deal. Tigers seem like they want Javier Baez more and Yanks seem more commited to Seager. Then there’s Semien another team will pay $100-$150 mil for.
FWIW it sure seems like a lot of Phillies fans are pissed about them letting Neris walk. Their bullpen was bad in general but it looks like they enjoyed Neris
There is little doubt that the Astros made a 6/210 offer but it is unlikely that it is a standing offer. Any large contractual offer I have ever been associated with included a time limit and this one is probably no different.
It will be interesting to see what kind of contract Collin McHugh signs. Certainly, he would have taken the deal that Neris got and probably would have accepted a 1 year or cheaper 2 year deal. The Astros targeted Neris for the reasons stated in previous posts. If he turns in a year like he did in 2019, it will be a huge boost to the pen. His K rate is great and if he can limit the walks and get that whip down to 1.00-1.10, he'll be successful in his role. The Astros probably have a good idea how they think they'll get something more out of him, whether is throwing the splitter more or the sinker...
I think if Correa doesn’t resign that money will be spent on another starter and acquiring a bat. But I think Stroman and Rodon are realistic options as #3 in the rotation. Astros could get a haul for Urquidy/Odorizzi & Prospects for a K. Marte, Mullins, etc. Basically I hope for this Maldonado Gurriel Altuve Bregman Pena Brantley Mullins/K. Marte Tucker Alvarez Castro Diaz McCormick Meyers, Siri, K. Lee, etc for the last spot Verlander McCullers Stroman or Rodon Valdez L. Garcia Pressly Stanek Neris Maton Baez Javier Urquidy or Odorizzi FA LH Power Arm
Castro despite being hurt a lot and Dusty not playing him in favorable match-ups was worth nearly double his annual salary
I guess that Click picked the reliever he wanted this time around. He had a chance at Graveman, but it seems he was a bandaid approach since the bullpen was in such disarray before the trade deadline. I don’t know much about this signing, but I find that relievers don’t get as much press as starters and every day players. However, when you get a good reliever, they seem to make all the difference in the world. I knew so little about Presley or even Graveman before they got signed.
I would've rather gone with a young guy like Lee in the 2nd half of the season and used the Castro/Odorizzi/Baez money on a solid SP and I said as much last offseason. Do you think a Musgrove type pitcher would've helped the Stros more in the WS than the three FA signings I listed above? I was hoping the overpay/length of contracts would be a lesson learned. Guess not.
I hate the move, a lot. Not the player, but the money we spent on him. If they think Neris will be able to significantly outperform what he's done, then it may end up being worth it. But his actual on field results with the Phillies over the last 4 years, don't care about his advanced numbers, have not justified what we are paying him. A 3.83 ERA (and FIP) is mediocre work for a reliever that we can get at a fraction of that price. If all else fails we can trade a C level prospect and rent a guy that can give us that. The move reeks of front office arrogance, we're simply a lot smarter than the Phillies, he'll be awesome for us. As always, I hope their confidence is justified, but their bullpen choices have yielded very inconsistent results over the last 2 years. I have no reason to believe they have a magic bullet than can repeat what we were able to do with Pressly.
Son of a ducking b**** how many GD starters do you people (Astros fandom in general) want? We have too many pitchers. Write it on a rock. If we run into a bunch of injuries or incompetence we have plenty of people in the minors and we can make trades at the deadline for more arms fairly cheaply. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills: JV, LMJ, Framber, Urquidy, Garcia, Javier, Odorizi, Solomon, Brown, Whitley, Bielack, whoever else flashes. That’s 3 guys who have pitched at an all star or above level recently, 2 guys who have been well above league average, a league average JAG, a guy who was really good last year while starting and 2 guys who have pitched really well in the minors and have showed some flashes of quality in the majors in Solomon and Bielack. Plus 2 top 100 type prospects. I mean ****- if we get past the point in time where these 11 guys can’t get us through the year then I guess it just wasn’t our ****ing year. Shut it down and call the season a wash. But yeah dude- we are way past the time where it makes sense to sign another pitcher on this team- it doesn’t allow for anything that makes send. now- if you want to trade for Bassit and move out Garcia or Urquidy, Whitley or brown, plus Solomon it Bielack I guess I’m cool with that. But just signing another guy? Nah- we need to be trading guys.
So much this. I’d have preferred Crane rebate that amount of money to every season ticket holder than use it that way (I’d have gotten a $10.50 rebate). I could then light that money on fire or toss it in the bottom of a wishing well and laugh about it, as opposed to this thing being an ear worm that brings back the stupid ****ing signings of Baez and Odorizi while guys like Springer and Correa walk because of our arrogance in thinking we can extract value from the bargain barrel instead of just paying our studs that are gone grown, awesome, and fans love. So so so so stupid.
