Obviously he wasn't suited for SG or Small Forward. Wow, doesn't take a genius to figure that. Have you seen his shooting percentages. You don't think it should have been a gradual transition from wing to front court?
People keep saying that and I ask what changes do you want them to make? I always get crickets. Your premise is that Kerr would have these players further advanced. I say Bull Crap
Well make up your mind. first you imply he didn't weigh 230 coming into the NBA and that as he gained weight they turned him into a big...and now you're saying it's clear he should have never been a wing...yet, that's not what the scouting report says. The report said that he's a tweener and he might not be able to play anything. One coach saw him as a SF and the other saw him as a big. It wasn't a gradual transition at all, if anything, he had to transition to SF because he was a big for most of his life. If you're saying it wasn't smart for Jackson to try him at SF then...okay...that just proves the point that Kerr is a much better coach than Jackson.
@JayGoogle Rockets would gladly trade Kevin Porter Jalen Green Sengun Tate Kenyon Theis Garuba Josh Christopher Eric Gordon Augustin House Armoni Brooks Garrison Matthews for Steph Curry Draymond Green Klay Thompson Jordan Poole Andrew Wiggins Otto Porter Igloudala Wiseman Damion Lee Bjelica Both run a read a react offense. Sub out Steph Curry for Kevin Porter Jr driving the car. Makes a big difference.
My premise is that Kerr would have the team looking better, because coaching matters. Your argument seems to imply that it doesn't matter at all. I mean I could suggest changes that I think should be made but it's all theoretical here. I did mention these changes earlier in the thread and was pretty specific about them...but it's all in theory, only Silas can put those changes into action and see if they would work.
No I'm saying that there is only so much water you can hold in a cup or sponge. What makes you think any coach can accelerate the learning process sooner than any other coach? There are #1 picks that don't pan out? Fultz, Kwame Brown, and others. Are you saying Popovich or Kerr would have trained them better and faster than any other coach? How come Wiseman isn't better?
Jackson started Green as the 4 with Iggy, klay, steph, and David Lee in that 2014 series. I never said coaches have no role on the success of the team but much of the credit to coaching has been romanticized and over dramatized. Coaches have a role no doubt as everyone in the organization has a role from coaches to equipment managers. but players are the ones in the field making decisions, adjustments, and accounting for one another not coaches. Coaches can point out deficiencies, advise, set the style of play and make adjustments etc. but a team like the warriors would be successful regardless of coaching with the type of talent they had/have. I didn’t say win a championship necessarily but talented nba teams with the right chemistry will be successful no matter who coaches them because at the end of the day it’s still 5 on 5 basketball.
I'm not really talking about learning, I do think some coaches can help develop a player. I think there is a reason Kobe and Michael saw the game the same way, in fact, all of Phil's stars saw the game the same way. Everyone talks about Phil and how he affected their mental approach to the game, I don't think that's a coincidence. I think Popovic had a clear influence on Kawhi as well when you hear about the stories of how much he worked with him and how much he pointed out things to him that he needed to correct...and had that effect on all players he coached. Obviously, as a student of anything really good teachers can help you. Most people I think would agree with this on any subject, why would basketball be any different? Of course, some people just don't have the talent or mentality (or not the right personality fit for a certain coach) but my main point is that a different coach is going to have a different outcome. I loathe the argument that if you changed the coach nothing would change. something would. It could be better or...worse, although not sure how bad it could be but...something is going to change. If you hire JVG tomorrow the team would turn into a defensive team and certain players that Silas likes, JVG wouldn't touch. If you hired MDA there is no way we're playing 3 bigs, Wood would see the floor, Sengun....MDA wouldn't even touch Theis, not with Wood or Sengun on the roster, as MDA prefers space over everything. If you had Popovic the team would be disciplined over everything else, bad shots would mean bench time...and you could go on and on. So yeah, a different coach means this team would play differently and through that the team would play better or worse. That's all I'm saying.
But you're giving Jackson credit when he still played him the vast majority of the time at wing. Your one example just says that he thought Green should matchup against Blake which...is correct. It didn't mean that he was going to start him as a PF the next season, everything we know from the data and quotes says nope. He saw Green as a SF. Also, saying that maybe they wouldn't win a championship proves the point. Because Kerr took a playoff team and made them a championship team. I mean there's a reason why playoff teams still move on from their coaches. The Clippers obviously thought that coaching matters and that there was something Rivers was doing wrong and that they could do better with Lue.
Kerr’s 2019-2020 were 1-4 with Curry in the lineup to start the season before curry went down if it’s any indication of how their season would be even with Curry in the lineup. Who knows but my point is they went 15-50 that year with still some really good players on their roster. I’m not sure what Kerr can do with a young team with little continuity, time and talent.
No kidding. And have you seen their head coaches salary? Tilman would never pay a coach much. Thus this talk of bringing in a great coach is futile. No one wants to coach this team for about 1.8 million. Not Kerr, not Pops, not Anyone.
I don’t discredit NBA coaches value. I just think it’s over romanticized and over emphasized. I guess that’s where we differ. I’d say at least 75% of the team’s success is based on player decision making, talent, and chemistry. 25% or less coaching. That’s why i call the NBA a players league.
Both Kerr and Phil Jackson have/had a hands off approach. They let the players figure things out. That's why Phil Jackson is referred to as the Zen Master. He was out hugging trees while he let Michael Jordan kick the players butts in practice. Kobe did the same. Popovich was always a yeller. Would yell at Duncan as an example. If I rip into my best player, the others will listen. Kawhi said screw that I'm out of here. Where have the Spurs been since. It's the players ultimately who perform on the court. The mistake you are making is assuming this team should be further along than it is. Why would you think that with 20 y/o Kevin Porter Jr running point full time and 19 y/o Jalen Green having to both run a read and react offense in the NBA. Neither a point guard. Kevin Porter Jr : according to basketball-reference.com Porter jr.....................PG.......SG...........SF..... 19/20 (rookie)....... -- ........24%........76%.... 20/21........................30%.....59%........12%..w/Rockets 30% @ PG x 26 games 21/22.........................98%......2%......... -- ...... So he has played a total of 40 games approximately at point guard....but Kerr would have him further along. Wow, well package that and sell it. Make millions. Your walk on water coaches could teach a monkey quantum physics in one week I'm sure. You do know that point guards entering the league have been learning the position while going to basketball camps and clinics probably specifying in Point Guard skills. Even at that, many don't make it. Here you think the 19 and 20 year old should be miles ahead at the greatest level in the world. I posted numbers yesterday in PnR (Ball Handler). Both Green and Porter had better numbers than Cunningham and Suggs (who both have probably been going to clinics on the matter since they were young). Suggs was a football guy but I'm sure he went to a Steph Curry camp or CP3 clinic somewhere along the line. I can link article after article of how Anthony Edwards looked bad last season after half the games. Then started to get it. But we can't give Porter/Green 20 games. All heads must roll. It's a joke to imply it's all the coaches fault. Most of us can't get our 18 or 19 year olds to take out the trash nowadays. It's the parents fault. Just like it's the coaches fault for a newbie point guard to kick the ball out of bounds accidentally.
I agree. The NBA has always been about talent and chemistry. The value of coaches don’t hold as much weight to me. Like i said Silas isn’t making Wood make half his FT or telling KPJ to lose his dribble. That’s on players to execute.
Yes absolutely. Coaches are there for a reason but ultimately execution and decision making on the court is up to players.
I agree. And who can tell me the percentage of a players improvement is not due to assistant coaches. I remember Capela when he first came into the league. He barely had the stamina to play 18 minutes. He couldn't catch a lob pass to save his life. But John Lucas would open up the gym at 5 a.m. to run Capela through drills. Not D'Antoni. Kenyon Martin Jr improving his 3-point shot last season. Probably not because of Silas. But off with Silas' head for poor 3-point shooting and FT shooting. Dwight Howard couldn't make a free throw to save his life. Should we have fired the Orlando, Lakers coaches along with ours back then? D-12 had issues at FT line stemming before coming to Houston.
