Without knowing what other offers he had, I’d agree it’s an overpay mostly because the player option. I assume the Astros had better info than all other teams on his health. If we assume Correa is gone, Crane may have felt he needed to overpay a little though. If he is anywhere near where he was prior to the TJ, the Astros will have a very formidable rotation. I think the World Series showed you can never have too much pitching.
I think there were 2 landing spots for Verlander, Angels and Yankees. Once N.Syndegaard signed with the Angels, Verlander signs so I think that was his destination. Yankees probaly offered the same amount of money and factor in that G.Cole is their ace. In Houston, he would be ace. I don't think he would got to a NL club because he has to bat. Hopefully we can catch some more fire.
Very happy to have JV back. Now, just get Carlos signed and this offseason is a success. Anything else would be gravy.
I hate it. Didn't want him back. 40 yrs old/TJ surgery....25 mil/player option. I'm very skeptical of him making it through a season healthy...much less two. And, with the same effectiveness. We could easily be left short again in a Championship window. We're gonna need another starter. We'll see if that gets done...then there's CC. Don't like the implications either.
Wow. My internet has been going through an outage all day so I'm just now seeing this. Glad to see Verlander stay with the Astros and not go to another contender.
It's a gamble, given his age and recent history. But any pitcher we sign for big bucks would be a gamble. Verlander should be motivated to "prove himself" again -- good news for us. Plus he's probably looking at his former Detroit running mate Max Scherzer dominate...and he's thinking to himself that he can do the same thing. We are a 100-win team if he comes back strong.
He gives us a potential ace. That's good. But if we have to go through another post season with bull pen games there will be some crying in baseball.
Man, this really is the golden age of Astros baseball. I love that playoffs is a foregone conclusion for Astros fans currently. I remember years--decades--when any Houstonian would give his left nut for a postseason game in Houston. (just a general observation your post brought to mind, PSJ; no personal criticism intended at all.)
