If everything you write here is true, how does it follow that he used that hand gesture in order to communicate sympathies to white nationalism in particular, as opposed to expressing common cause in disliking the people who are casting him as a terrorist/murderer?

Don't exactly understand your question... I think his cry session on the stand was his reaction to being cast as a murderer (not crying over killing the two people, but for being cast as a murder). In the bar he was giving the white nationalist symbol with his hand to appear a part of the Proud Boys that were crowding around him. He was enjoying their attention and the kudos they giving him, and he was trying to fit in with them.
