uhh the team isn't just about the QB. You need to evaluate all 53 guys on the roster and you do that the best when you put them in positions to potentially win rather than playing in garbage time for 3 quarters which is what you would get if you played Mills.
So I guess what Tyrod did against one of the worst teams in the league yesterday was helping evaluate those players?
No but that's not the right question. The question is is he better than Mills and if he is then he should start. It'd be one thing if Mills was the future of the franchise but he isn't. Benching the superior player in order to evaluate a backup QB would be dumb
It’s certainly debatable on who’s better. And you can not definitively say that Mills isn’t the future, his youth and talent say that’s a possibility. What you can certainly say for a fact is that Tyrod is not the future. Benching a back up QB to start a younger prospect is the smart play.
Tyrod was signed to be the backup to Watson. He should be the backup to Mills. There is not a QB worth the 1st pick in the next draft. Mills will be the starting QB next year. He needs as much experience as possible.
No taylor was signed to b a stop gap for another qb. We all knew that Watson was never gonna play another game for us. It's speaks volume when a "back up qb" out plays our rookie qb in the off season. We gave mills a shot and he sucked. Just let mills sit in the bench land see if he could win the starting position next season. I rather we just let tyrod do what we signed he up for, be a stop gap qb until we find the qb. This season is already over. Just let tyrod get empty stats at least this way u r letting the rookie learn from the bench and avoid getting ptsd.
This makes no sense. You haven’t seen what Mills can do. He’s had very minimal time/snaps and games in college and pros. On top of that, we now know it’s not just Mills messing up. This team is not good. So the flashes he’s shown are legit. He needs to start the rest of the season, period. Tyrod had no upside. Mills does.
I know a lot of think this happened to Carr but I think Carr just wasn't that good. He never had a problem standing in the pocket and some other lineman supposedly were upset at some sacks he took instead of throwing the ball away
Don’t see the upside in Mills. When the coaches have to resort to going back to Tyrod because they need a “spark,” it’s not good.
You play Taylor to see how many games he can play without getting injured. You know he won't make it the rest of the season, so Mills will be back to get some more experience, but there's a ton of side bets on it. The over/under is 3 consecutive games started before getting knocked out by an injury. It's the most exciting thing going on with the team right now.
There’s definitely no upside to Tyrod is the problem. At least Mills has size and big league arm. Enough mobility for a new age QB. The only thing Tyrod has is speed. But he’s getting older. He was also supposed to be a vet in processing, well how did that work out?
Don’t see the arm strength in Mills either. I see him under throw a lot of balls. I’m not denying that Tyrod sucked yesterday. Everyone can see that. Rust was definitely a factor. However, the Miami defense was successful in blitzing most of the game on Sunday. Mills has mightily struggled in both recognizing blitz coverage and shifting protections to counteract. Plus, Mills has floated too many balls up when pressured. He might’ve gotten beat to shreds if he started yesterday. I know we’re trying to hold out for some hope in Mills as a starter-level QB, but I don’t see it. He’s not a truck; he’s a trailer. There’s a reason he was the 8th quarterback taken this past year.
That’s a fair opinion. I just don’t think he’s had enough time to show growth. He’s had some wow plays whether people want to admit it or not. And there is no debate that he has a big arm, Tyrod isn’t even close. His under throws have nothing to do with strength, it’s more about accuracy and leading.
To add to that, Mills faced far superior defenses. With far superior pass rush, and didn’t do near as bad as Tyrod did. You can’t claim rust as a factor when the rook was thrown in to the fire against the leagues best after only 11 college starts.
Of course I can; he hadn't played in a few months. It's not like our system was completely familiar to Tyrod when he came here. And we'll have to agree to disagree about arm strength. The measurables don't matter if Mills can't show them on the field (where it actually counts). Mills has not had the best footwork when trying to get off some of those throws. And, he doesn't use his legs enough given the O-Line problems. I don't think it's a slam dunk that Mills would've done appreciably better if he started over Tyrod against the Dolphins (see my point about the blitzes). I will say that our offensive success has come from going uptempo and not trying to focus on establishing the run. Both QBs have had success there.
Mills has shown some arm talent multiple times this season and preseason. There’s a few throws on the run that only a hand full of QBs can make in the league.
In spots. I'd to see more consistency (especially on the road). Ultimately, it's hard for me to give a lot of grace to a 3rd-round pick at QB because the odds of that kind of player being anything more than a back-up are pretty slim (based on history). If Mills is not starter-level at the very least, I'd like to know sooner rather than later because backup QBs are ubiquitous. That would be the whole point of not going back to Tyrod to finish out the year. The fact the coaching staff thought that Tyrod would spark the team to a better performance--despite coming off a long injury--looks foolish. I agree that more data on Mills is needed, but the early sample size is not promising enough for me if the goal is finding a starter-level to franchise-level quarterback.
Yeah I can agree with most of this. The thing about the coaching staff wanting a spark is just self preservation. Coaches overwhelmingly tend to go with the vet because they’ve “been there”. Mills faced way harder competition and faired better than Tyrod did. I like Tyrod, I think he’s the vet you need behind a young guy. But he is what he is, a spot starter and great back up with limited arm talent and size but offers you some off script capabilities. I still think Mills has more upside with moving the pocket and off script plays due to the arm talent and speed that he doesn’t use…….yet.
