The Line 5 pipeline has a really troubled history of being being terribly maintained with terrible safety record. It's also in a really ecologically and economically sensitive fresh water area.

An oil spill there would be catastrophic. It's also operating in benefit of a Canadian company transporting Canadian Oil from Canada to Canada (as a short cut cutting through Wisconsin and Michigan). 90-95% of oil being carried goes to refineries in Canada only.

What's your stance on the importance of the US president protecting Canadian oil interests while being a ticking time bomb on US soil?

Oil markets are international. If there is a price shock in Ontario, we'll feel it in the US. Enbridge is traded on the NYSE and has many American investors. And, if they shut the pipeline, Enbridge will probably truck the oil to market, and probably through Michigan. Trucking oil is more dangerous than running a pipeline (though granted, each failure by truck is less catastrophic than one in an underwater pipeline, should that come to pass).

Not arguing for the pipeline. I must be feeling crotchety today because every overly-simplistic twitter-wisdom on government policy is getting my goat. Seems to me that the Admin's decision to do an analysis on what market impacts shutting the pipeline would have is the smart next step.
