Missing a guy wide open under the basket isn’t a nit pick. That’s why the play by play guys were groaning. It’d be one thing if KPJ looked him off for a better pass but he didn’t look up. Too busy dribbling.
The 2nd option had no chance of being intercepted or another defender collapsing. KJ was in perfect spot for that pass, see above.
I edited my previous response for clarity but I’ll respond on this post as well. The second play seemed more like happenstance than anything Porter actually set up. I’m not convinced he saw Martin. Martin apparently felt the same way since he jumped up….something players do when they feel their teammates missed them for an easy bucket.
If you look at his stats this year from last , he's clearly taken a step in the wrong direction and particularly when it comes to ball security , statistically going from 16.6 points , 6.3 assists and 3.5 turnovers to 12.5 points , 5.0 assists and 5.3 turnovers. His FG% is down 4.8% and his FT shooting down 11.9% to a career low. His 3 point shooting has improved by 4% to a very respectable .361. I know its early and other than the turnover numbers I'm not particularly concerned .... but those turnovers have a broad effect. I can sure see the star potential , he definitely has the physical tools , he's got to tighten up the mental aspect of the game with the careless turnovers , dribbling it out of bounds , letting someone swipe it as you cross half court .... and maybe the biggest thing is just attacking instead of dribbling the air out of the ball. Get down hill and put defenders on their heels and do it early in the shot clock. That and running the pick and roll / pop with Wood early and often .... it puts Wood in his most favorable situations and makes defenders commit one way or the other. Someone's getting an open look. I'm also content to give him this entire season to work the bugs out but if by seasons end we haven't seen significant improvement , they have to try something different. I'll take the turnovers when he's attacking ....
yeah, nice roll by KMJ; KPJ will have to recognize these. The second pass is more of his current bread and butter, gather a crowd and find the open man. still a long way to go…
I hear you on both fronts but it's such a small sample size of what 7 games? It is concerning that he really has only had one clean game so far but again, very small sample size and also the start of a season when he is likely being asked to do something differently. I actually wondered if the Rockets have it backwards and KP3 should be the shooting guard and Green should be groomed to be the point guard.
Truthfully speaking neither should be the point guard. Green's claim to fame prior to the draft was that he was projected to be a legit scorer and if that's the case I don't want him having to carry the load of being this team's point guard. Porter might have ball handling and playmaking instincts but either we've seen the most he can do or we don't have the correct system to unleash his potential. Either way he needs to have his confidence built back up by being a 6th man scorer or start him and have Green come off the bench. We need a legit point guard to orchestrate whatever the hell Silas wants them to run.
Why? I say keep putting the ball into these two guys hands. Doesn't matter how ugly it looks. What matters is how ugly it looks in 6 months compared to now.
Don't mean to sound rude but what is your expectation 6 months from now (e.g. end of the season) for these two guards? I guess to be more specific, what are you anticipating in terms of assists per game, turnovers per game, shooting %, etc. ?
my expectation for the backcourt this year was 17/4/7 for KPJr, and 17/4/3 for Jalen Green…I think they can both still accomplish that
Maybe as an eventuality but not right now , he's got enough on his plate. This is true .... and as I said above (and elsewhere) I'm content to give this experiment the entire season before passing judgement and obviously so are the Rockets as the payoff could be so huge. I guess the only reason I'm complaining here is that its breakdowns in fundamentals - silly turnovers that are so annoying. I can accept the "aggressive turnovers" as part of the process not the head up your ass turnovers. I can't quantify the expected improvement with numbers right now on the part of Porter , he showed last year he could do this , now go out there and make the right play , pick defenses apart and put guys on their heels with some consistency minus the unnecessary turnovers like dribbling it out of bounds along the baseline or allowing some clown to swipe it while you aren't paying attention while crossing the time line. The numbers will come.
I think he'll be fine...given that he's put in the right role/position. I think the kid might have too much on his plate--not only having to build on last season but also now being told that "You're the starting point guard, facilitate and make sure 4 other guys are contributing" has been a lot for him so far. Plus he's not even in the same stratosphere as a Luka or a Harden in terms of playmaking and court vision so the offensive system that's in place (e.g. relying on your primary ball handler to make the correct reads and passes) isn't helping the cause either.
