Well, there is no other choice now, he is what he is, and we as Rocket fans will wish for the best, so for now, the argument should be.....what is BEST for his development. I think playing him with KPj is not helping, he is not getting enough touches, they need to be separated as starters, if you want to start Green, then sit KPj, and vice versa.... Let EACH one be the focus when they are in the game.....limit their time together on the court. We need them to develop with players that fit their skillset - KPj needs a guy where he KNOWS where he will be on the floor - Eric Gordon. Green needs a guy that can push it in transition and utilize his speed - John Wall. Then as they develop they eventually become starters - but right now, they are both playing like they have never played the game of basketball before..... And it is hindering EACH of their development. DD
At this point any and every option is on the table. The issue I have is this: if Green is playing 32 minutes a night and is struggling as a starter, is it going to make a monumental difference for him to come off the bench to play against the other team's reserves, when he still wouldn't have a proper point guard to play with in an offense that offers no guidance? If the goal is to allow Green to get into the NBA flow against the other team's 2nd unit, I would predict that all Jalen will do is chuck unconsciously because he would be the only "scoring threat" on the floor with, say, Sengun, Nwaba, Tate, etc. That might drive up his scoring average but it's not really giving him a better learning experience for the long haul.
The thing that bothers me is people saying "people were saying Green is NBA ready!" When their argument was because he playing against grown men in the G-League. The G-League has an evolving league that hasn't reached their goal of being NBA-LITE (minor leagues) and may never reach it. There's really no history of the G-League turning NBA prospects into day-1 ready players. If you want to critique him, do it. But if you're too stupid to use your own brain and base your whole argument around the fact that "people said he was NBA ready" that's on you. Did you think he was NBA ready because he played in the G-League? No? Then why are your expectations based on other people's opinion. Green isn't any less of a #2 prospect now than he was before the draft and it has nothing to do with how ready he is today.
Totally agree that Green should be coming off the bench. It's hard for him to develop when you have a guy like KPJ at PG. Last night was a great example. Green rarely got the ball, and ended up taking several bad shots when he did. How many turnovers did the Rockets have 3 quarters, 30? I must've been an the NBA record. It was one of the most pathetic games I've ever seen from an offensive standpoint. During the draft I was under the impression Green was the most athletic out of the top five. I would NOT have been disappointed had the Rockets drafted Mobley. I always thought he had lotta potential as well. However, it's pretty clear at this pont Green has a long ways to go before he's starting material in the NBA. Physically, he's nowhere close to being ready. And the fact that the coaching is bad, I fear he won't develop correctly. All he is right now is a 3-point shooter that can't hit 3's consistently.
It is more than that, you need to give your two developing star players - guys who compliment them, so the majority of Green's time on the floor should be with: Tate Green Wood KMJ Wall/Augustine The majority of KPJ's time should be with: Gordon KPJ Wood KMJ Tate Sprinkle in the rest as you see fit. If KPJ is going to be successful he needs guys he knows where they will be on the floor, smart players. If Green is going to be successful he needs someone that will push the ball - and use his skill and he should be the focus when he is on the floor. Just my .02. DD
Anthony Edwards before coaching change 14, 4, and 3 on 38/31/80 shooting splits Anthony Edwards after coaching change 23, 5, and 3 on 44/34/77 shooting splits Silas is gonna have to go if this keeps up…let’s see what a better coach can do with these young players
I can get why some on here want instant gratification--it's been a while since this franchise has fallen this far. I mean it also doesn't help that people are also box score watching other rookies but that's their prerogative to feed their own (questionable) needs. I would have been fine with anyone at #2--Green, Mobley, Suggs, Barnes, etc...whoever it was because none of those players were marked as transcendent generational talent. Even Cunningham wasn't rated on that level. If they pan out and become All-Stars, great, but the draft has always been a crapshoot. Just because someone looks good 6 games into the season doesn't mean it will translate over the long haul and the opposite can also apply. A rookie 6 years ago averaged 19 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 1.2 bpg on 52% shooting from the field and 72% from the foul line in his first 6 starts. Another rookie big averaged 13.7ppg, 7 rpg, 1.2 bpg on 56% shooting coming off the bench a few years back. Both looked to go onto having promising careers but neither has lived up to expectations so anything is possible.
I didn't want to put in the coaching factor because I'm a "Silas Hater" on this board. My jaded eyes have blinded me to the fact that he's the "perfect coach for this situation"
For sure for me that is part of my issue, I expected much much more from a number 2 pick, usually guys that are a bit further away slide down to 8-12 in the draft, Kobe, Luka etc...... Number 2 picks should be NBA ready, come in grab a spot and take off - I guess there are some that take more time to develop - even Yao Ming only did 13-7 his rookie year. DD
Again, I'm open to any options and I agree with you that this rotation/lineup right now is just atrocious and poorly fitted. That's 100% on the coaching staff, specifically on Silas. If you've had a full summer league, a full slate of preseason games, and another 6 games into the regular season (not to mention X amount of practice days) and you still don't know what you have in terms of your players' strengths and weaknesses (ergo their fit)....I don't know what you've been doing all this time as a head coach.
What happened to the g league making Green the most nba ready rookie? Now the goal post is shifting to we can’t even have expectations for a #2 pick? As if a #2 pick getting embarrassed out there game after game is supposed to be normal? Mobley and Barnes, and I’ll throw Sengun in there as well, are two-way stars off the bat. Giddey is looking like a generational passer. Green is never going to be a positive defender due to his size and frame, anyone with eyes could see this before the draft. The hope was that he could be an elite offensive player to make up for it. Right now he’s a bad shooter, but I can accept that those %s will go up. What is more concerning is his utter inability to get to the rim/finish at the rim for someone that’s supposed to be elite athletically. I have never seen someone that’s supposed to be athletic get stuffed so many times. The hope is that this is another drawback from lack of strength, but my concern is with his small frame, he may never gain the necessary strength and size to finish well in the paint. I hope that’s not the case but it is a concern. Worst of all though, it’s not the bad shooting, or the inability to finish, it is the utter lack of impact on the game in any positive way. We have seen some flashes of nice drop offs that turn into assists, he’s drawn more fouls in the last few games, but this has done nothing except make his counting stats look a little better. I have never seen him once impact the flow of the game like a Mobley, Barnes, Giddey or even Sengun in his limited minutes. You see it, Sengun is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination and makes a ton of mistakes, but there are times that he just IMPACTS the game, not box score numbers, the game just shifts due to his play. I’ve seem that from all the top rookies. Even at his best, I’ve only seen empty stats from Green. And Instagram followers. Congrats Tillman.
Perhaps that's on the fans' fault for having unrealistic expectations than it is on the player? The kid is barely 19 years old and is in a system without a real point guard, playing in an offense that isn't catered to a young/inexperienced group. If he succeeded despite these bottlenecks then I would say we have the next Kobe or Harden on our hands. But given what environment and personnel he has right now I don't think anyone should write off Green as a bust, especially if one is doing that just to get himself/herself off because they made some random prediction that "We should take Player X over Green" and Player X is doing relatively better right now.
"You guys" aka the Mobley Mob are just chasing the wind. What do you want a cookie? Why sabotage every Pro Green thread with "I wish we picked Mobley" thoughts? Dude scored 2 points the other night, but somehow you all will find a way to amplify that and at the same time take all the shots possible at JG? All of the highly drafted players have their positives and negatives. YOUR expectation on what a #2 pick should look like is meaningless especially when comps have already been offered that plainly show a need to be MORE patient with guys like Green. All that and not even taking into consideration coaching, roster compatibility and roles with each team and the fact that Mobley and his group shunned Houston when they asked for a workout. Sengun was an MVP of his professional league, and yet THATS the barometer set for a guy who's had 21 games as a professional in Green? Scottie Barnes fans should be the loudest, but yet here we are with the Mobley guys going on attack each day, and then turtling when Green shows any sign of growth and positive play. When Green plays well or God forbid outplays the expectations what will you say? "Glad I was wrong" - NBA dish has a section for Cavs fans Im sure.
I don't see a single fan writing him off, just many of us disappointed at how FAR from ready he really is...and how CRAP the Rockets org is at helping him learn how to be successful in the NBA game. The Gleague is a joke, BTW - Hartenstink averaged 20-10 there......they don't play defense....and many are too slow for the NBA ....Green should have gone to college, at least he would have gotten some proper coaching. And just because some of us are disappointed at how far he is or where he is in development does not mean we have given up on him - far from it, we want him to succeed - but many of us are not going to be happy that right now he just gets an NBA participation trophy. DD
And no, this doesn’t change anything and he could still be Lavine or Beal. So…5 more years of a bad player before becoming an empty calories high scoring guy that doesn’t impact winning much, and definitely can’t be the #1 guy on even an above 0.500 team, let alone championship team. That’s who you want at #2 in a deep draft? And you blame us for being mad when we had the foresight to see it.
