But I still believe I still believe Through the pain And through the grief Through the lies Through the storms Through the cries And through the wars... OH, I STILL BELIEVE!!!!
I'll ask you since it may have gotten lost in the shuffle in this thread. I watched much of the game on a plane from (coincidentally) ATL to TPA with no sound. Why didn't Baker double switch Siri and Graveman? I can think of no other reason than a screw up.
My only guess is that they didn’t think Graveman would throw 2 innings… but once he got back to the dugout and said he was good to go 2, they went ahead and let him bat. But yeah, should have been a double switch… even if Graveman wasn’t going to go 2. The only person that loses in all of this is Siri, who basically had an AB taken away from him.
Right, because regardless of going 2 innings, if Graveman bats in the 9th in the cleanup spot, they will have at least scored another run. They didn't need him standing at the plate in the 9th spot. Had to be a Dusty moment.
Yep. “Double switching is such intricate strategy!… AL managers don’t know what they’re doing!… you have smarter managers in the NL! Long live Pitchers batting!!”
Go for it man, **** it. Astros are gonna win or lose regardless of your record. Just wear a backwards cap or something .
True, but the Astros went all hand on deck to get a win. Valdez got lit up again, and the Astros needed stability to bridge them into their elite bullpen arms. Urquidy ended up with the win… The way I see it, What does it matter to have rested guys, if there are no more games to play. Dusty made up for a lot of his Dusty’ism moves in the season with this post season. He went Marwin over Diaz, he moved Bregman down the order of the lineup, he put his most reliable starter of the World Series to pitch in relief… Dusty was en fuego yesterday!
The Astros won the game and Framber needed to be pulled, so this isn't a complaint about that. I don't understand using Urquidy for an inning there if you don't think he could still pitch game 6 if he gets out of the inning quickly though. I'm trying to think who was available at that time and if there was a matchup reason they went with Urquidy or maybe they thought he could go longer than an inning if needed. Urquidy / Grienke are probably the Astros MVPs to this point.
Do it. Astros will win! And if they don't, enjoy it anyway. The experience of a World Series game is all you can ask for, everything else is icing on the cake!
I honestly think that Baker felt better with Garcia coming in for Game #6 than Urquidy and knew game 7 would go to Greinke with Odorizzi in long relief if needed and Urquidy available again.
They needed innings. Its an elimination game. There’s no game 6 if they lose. Urquiddy was going to be getting work in regardless. Unlike the Eovaldi desperation move, the Astros had to win that game. If Framber wasn’t on full rest, Urquiddy probably starts that game on 3 days rest. Now they evaluate all options over the last 2 games of the season. Nobody is expected to pitch 5-6 innings at this point, even on full rest. Granted if Garcia or whoever comes out like they did game 6 against Boston, you ride that adrenaline all the way.
I would understand if they got 3 innings from Urquidy, but they only used him for 1. Was one inning of Urquidy worth possibly 5 innings of a fully rested Urquidy in Game 6 and a 5 innings of fully rested Garcia in Game 7? Yes, Dusty has been doing well this series though.
If I understand, you are saying use your best pitchers in the highest leverage spots. It's not that Dusty doesn't trust Urquidy in a Game 6 start, but that the spot in Game 5 was higher leverage than starting Game 6 and Garcia can still give you some quality innings on short rest?
Astros starters seem to do better when the Braves have little time to prepare for them - I wouldn’t announce who the starter was til right before the game, or I would announce one person and start another
It's easy to say that now. At the time, the only thing on the mind should be, how the **** do I get 18 more outs and limit the opponent offense to give my offense a chance to come back. You figure out the rest later. It's not like Urquidy can't be used in some capacity if needed, but they may decide not to start him. You basically have 4 long relievers at this point with Garcia, Urquidy, Odorizzi, and Javier, and you just gotta figure out how to use them.
Yup, with us falling behind early and starting to catch up, we needed to win that game before any others come in play so Urquidy was the best option other than Odorizzi. And Javier was already used and hit the night before. Garcia and Greinke are starters and better suited as such while Urquidy has shown he can come in reflief no problem.
