If you are tillman, and you're going to lose no matter what, do you pay Silas to do nothing while paying another coach to lose again or do you let Silas take the heat while he's on his guaranteed years? I don't know if his 3rd or 4th year is guaranteed but I wouldnt' bet on Tillman eating a big coaching contract while still treading water. Unless the ROckets decide to roll the dice and trade their way into the playoff contention next offseason, I'd say he stays.
I watched all of the first 3 games - I only saw part of Dallas and part of last night. Like I said earlier, we played one team that we were clearly on the same level as and we crushed them, for whatever that's worth. That's about as good a metric as I know of, and you won't really provide any so what else am I supposed to do?
If Quin Snyder was on the Rockets bench, yeah an L would likely still fbe the end result, but I’d bet the players wouldn’t look confused or unorganized, and the game would be a lot more competitive.
The goal clearly isn’t winning or being competitive. It feels like this is a “take inventory and see what we got” season as we have far too many players for the NBA roster. Some players want to move on and some players are just starting out, that’s not easy to manage. Silas thought Wall would be running point just a few months ago so I can’t fault him too much for how things look so early in the season. If things still look so rudderless after the deadline then I’ll change my mind. Still feels like this is just an extension of preseason/training camp. Hopefully we move some guys by the deadline, like EG and House. As I’ve said elsewhere, Green and Sengun should anchor the bench so the former can get acclimated and the latter work on being a distributor. Garuba needs minutes, not sure what’s happening there. Christoper should be in the G League running the Vipers.
While that is a good point, I think it will be Stone feeling some heat and throwing Silas under the bus. If Green doesn't look good this year I am sure TF will find someone to blame.
Haha, what? How exactly? Quin Snyder has coached exactly one NBA team in his career - this incarnation of the Utah Jazz, featuring Gobert, Ingles, etc. How do you know what he'd be like in another context? Did anybody sit around and say "man, that Tyronn Lue, he's a title winning coach if there ever was one!" back in 2016? Everything is situation, and the rockets situation is **** and pain.
Im with you on this, as much as I respect @Nook 's opinion on pretty much most things. I think its unfair to say Silas is doing a poor job. This is Kenny Atkinson's records during his time as a head coach. https://www.basketball-reference.com/coaches/atkinke01c.html
I asked you questions, you didn't answer any, and noted "you don't really watch". I didn't think the OKC game was demonstrably better than any of the other games. They were just playing a shitty team, as you said. Again, I've asked many times, but you seem uber focused on whether they won or lost the game, or random analytics. Name some things the coaching staff has done well this year? They're there... they're getting paid after all. I've already walked through a bunch of things I don't like from them.
I watch the game, I don't watch every game to tell you whether or not the Rockets pace or 3PAttempt rate is high relative to the rest of the league - I have to look that up. I'm assuming you do too. I can't point to anything espeically good this staff is doing - nor can I point to anything especially bad. Not that I've really bothered to look - liek I don't feel like calculating "after time out" play efficiency. I know you can do that on stats.nba.com, or at least used to be able to. Why don't you go ahead and do it? I'd say the "this process is bad, I just know it!" folks have the burden of proof over the "meh, we don't know yet and we're gonna suck regarldeess" folks. I don't think you can though. That's my point. All we can do is look at the results. Bad players, bad record. That's what tanking teams do.
I was one person complaing about how they were playing even though they were winning. They were playing selfish and Silas seemed happy and I was concerned with that.
Because Snyder’s Jazz teams execute well, have an actual system, and have a culture in place. Snyder coached them to the #1 seed in the West last year despite not having an actual superstar (or two) on the roster. He coached a rookie-led Jazz team by Mitchell to the second round of the playoffs, and actually put up a good fight against the CP3/Harden 65 win team. He maximizes his player’s strengths. I have absolutely no doubt he’d do much better than Silas here.
Snyder is a great coach, but it took years for the Jazz to get there. Snyder wasn’t thrust into an impossible harden situation either. Silas only has like 1.1 seasons under his belt while we are comparing a coach with multiple seasons. I would prefer a first year Snyder over Silas given hindsight but I don’t think there would be much of a noticeable difference.
Yes because they've had the same coach/core players for eight consecutive seasons, back when half the current Rocket team was in elementary school. I honestly can't think of an example that proves the bad faith of your argument better. Thanks!
Quin Snyder inherited a team with Gordon Hayward and Rudy Gobert and won 38 games his first year in the league. Hayward 24 yeras old, Gobert 22 years old in a league that was much less analytics oriented than it is right now.
That’s a bit unfair since we don’t know what’s actually happening outside of the game. Like are we not giving the coaching staff ANY credit for how Sengun has looked? It’s just blame for not giving him more minutes? Let’s just assume Sengun is doing all of this on his own? Without really knowing the language or culture?
Show up for the games on time. Play Sengun early in his career. Reclaim Kevin Porter Jr. from the scrap heap. Name ONE negative thing they've done that isn't derivative of having crappy players. Let's start with just one lol.
Taking a deep dive into the intricacies of this Rockets coaching staff is like polishing brass on the Titanic. They are bad, this team is bad and will probably look completely different in a few years.
