Bowling - Handicapping

    So, we joined a bowling league, and it is a 100% handicap league up to 200.

    However, this means that if on average your team all bowl above 200, you have a major advantage.

    Isn't the handicap supposed to even things out?

    Seems to me that a proper handicap would be a percentage of the score subtracted from 300.

    So if your average is 220

    100% league = 80
    90% league = 72
    etc

    Whereas a person with a 160 average would have

    100% league = 140
    90% league = 126

    At least this way the two players would have an equal chance?

    We are in a 100% league but only up to 200 - which means teams can stack with players in the 210-220 range and kill everyone else.

    Seems to ruin the spirit of the fun leagues?

    Right?

    it's a once in a lifetime thing at uh uc. did it with the 2 finger/thumb out style too. normally i do like 100 :cool:

    We are in a 90% of 220 league.......anyone with a high avg has a major advantage in that scenario.

    If you can average over 200, you deserve the advantage.

    One of our guys tried to get the team to sandbag as we set averages, no one wanted to do it.....

    We are very mediocre....but having a blast.

    In a fun league it shouldn't matter. You are there to have fun. Sounds like you are there to try to compete with much better bowlers.

    Last 2 years I bowled, we won the league title. Decided to retire on top like John Elway.

    Well it is a "For Fun" league, but the handicap is there to make it more fair, and more fun for everyone.

    So if it is a 90% of 220 league, bowlers that have a high average have a major advantage statistically.

    If you are going to even it up, make it 100% of 300, and let people bowl in an equal environment.

    We are currently near the bottom but we finally got our 4th permanent player, 3 of our guys are subs and we have been further handicapped by having only 2 or 3 roll per week.

    We reset in Dec....so we will keep having fun and hope for a better 2nd half.

    Ok, been practicing, last night I averaged 191, my average is on the way back up, and I have finally got my ball back into the pocket on a more consistent basis, started first game with 5 straight strikes, and out of 10 frames 9 of them where in the pocket, got a few 9s....that should have been strikes.

    But that is bowling.

    It wouldn't be equal because it is much easier to improve on a 150 average than it is to improve on a 220 average. If joined a league today, I might average 140-150 early on, but be averaging 175 by the end of the year, so I'd have a decided advantage.
