You know what's funny...for all of the narratives and airplay Green and Christopher's familiarity and friendship got since we drafted both of them, Silas has yet to try and experiment playing both at the same time. Like, right now, if you're trying to find some kind (any kind) of comfort zone for your #2 pick...wouldn't you want to at least get him on the floor with the one person whose game he's familiar with? JC ain't all world right now but, from what I've seen, he hustles and tries hard. Why not have both of them on the floor for a few minutes at a time...I mean we're already pretty bad so it's not going to hurt anything.
This is the 9 billionth fire the coach thread and say you just want to see "actual coaching" rather than any observable or quantifiable output. Like what even is that when you're watching TV like me? Yelling? Clapping? Clipboard writing? It's a great trick because you can just keep saying it forever. I've said many times over the years that coaching is super-duper overrated in sports especially the NBA. A decent coach can maybe juice the performance a bit (10% more wins? I think Daryl has a theory on this) a bad one can r****d it - but most of it is the players, and we have 75 years of evidence of this. But, honestly post away - there's nothing else to talk about anyway. I'll still be here noting the process flaws, for the same reason.
My bad I took the "they" in your question as referring to the players. Nope, the coaches haven't done much lol
If you had Garuba, Christopher, and Green in the starting lineup together you'd have the 3 least efficient scorers on the entire roster starting. I mean it would probably be funny to watch, but I can't imagine thinking it would help the team. If we're honest, Garuba and Christopher should be in the g league and Green should probably come off the bench till he improves.
I gotta disagree with you here. If this was a normal season with a team looking towards making the playoffs (thereby needing to play as many vets as possible) then yes, time in the G League for Garuba and JC would be best. However, this team is nowhere near 10th seed material much less playoff contending so the team HAS minutes available to give to these rookies to get them the necessary burn time and experience now.
?? How about his mum? That would be comfort, wouldn’t it? Didn’t someone say he’s still breastfeeding? (I’m joking, obviously, and would like to see Jaygup get more burn, incl. next to JG. I think Jaygup’s gonna be good. Just the idea that an NBA pro should have his buddy on the court for comfort seems a bit ridiculous)
I was disagreeing with them starting, saying they they probably should be in the g league, I agree that the Rockets have the bench minutes available to keep them with the big team. It was really just saying that Christopher and Garuba absolutely shouldn't start.... and in a different situation where the team wanted to win, Green wouldn't start either.
Yes it's ridiculous if you're thinking of it along the lines of being babied. I thought I made it pretty clear that the comfort I'm referring to is the fact that they've played together before and are familiar with eachother's games. That counts a bit considering Green and some of the other players in the starting lineup tend to play keep away from Jalen.
I misread your comment and thanks for the clarification. I wouldn't start Garuba or JC either but, at some point, Silas needs to look down his bench during a 20 point 2nd half blowout and say "**** it; let's give these rookies some burn time"
I strongly disagree. Coaching matters. Look at ATL and MIN last year got completely reformed by a coaching change mid-season. Many other examples…
Well, that’s what you get for appropriating such a childish thread title. Lack of well-rounded takes goes with the territory in these threads.
This and peopel think we're overreacting when no tone of us expected to win. Atleast I didnt. What i expected was commom since rotations thats my biggest issue. You're playing all these vet for what? What exactly is starting Theis and playing House and Nwaba gonna give this team if we're losing anyway.
It's only 5 games into the season but we're on pace to have the worst point differential (currently sitting at -7.2) since the 82-83 Dream for Hakeem season that featured a -11.6 differential.
Leaving aside the fact that it's players doing the winning, correlation=/ causation etc - look at the other recent coaching changes that haven't made a damn difference at all. Dallas, Boston, New Orleans etc. In fact, there's many, many, many more of those than there are dramatic reversals (unless a team happens to add Kevin Durant, James Harden, and a new coach). Look at popovich da gawd who has been trotting out mediocrity treadmill spurs squads for his 3rd straight season this month. Did he magically forget how to coach? Or was it that having late career Lamarcus ALdridge and Demar Derozan as your primary threats isn't as good as Kawhi, manu, parker etc.
If you combined all the best abilities of the best coaches of all time and put them into one person, that person would still rack up big Ls with this Rockets team.
Good coaching at any level will transfer to all levels. Last season after BOTH Porter & Martin came back from the g league bubble they were making a difference in the NBA. This year not so much. same players, same level of competition, the variable is coaching.
That your possible suggestions are yelling, clapping and clipboard writing perhaps speak to a big confusion on what coaching actually is on your part. 90%+ of coaching is not done on gameday. Here's some simple questions for you. What are they trying to do on offense? Let the players PnR? Get it to the post? Pass a ton? Do a lot of off ball movement? Run a "triangle" system (lol)? Shoot a lot of 3s? Not shoot a lot of 3s? What are they trying to do on defense? Go over or under screens? Switch most picks? Not switch picks? Are they trying to play fast pace or slow pace? Give me some good example of something positive Silas has done this year in terms of coaching? Players are most important, FOR SURE, but for all the evidence we have of players being most important, we also have evidence of coaches being important. 10% is the entire difference between deep playoff runs and championships and weak playoff teams or worse. And its not just championships or bust. We all want a championship, but indeed... you get Lebron, you get a good coach, you're going places. But we can look as recent as last year's Hawks to see what happens when you replace a coach lacking in the organizational/system/scheme aspects of coaching with one that knows what he's doing. Are you trying to argue that coaching doesn't matter at all?
