Well i never knew why East Austin was more divided or how deeply racial groups were seperated when i was learning all i needed to know about race in Public School.

Did watch ACL on PBS occasionally to get some culture and cool vibes tho...

Columbus was a big ol rapist who opened the doors to genocide and exploitation of the Natives.

Yeah, we might realistically be a Rome like existence with bases all over the world, but it's not like we export whatever Columbus or Manifest Destiny represented to everyone else or even ourselves.

He gets taken dowm a notch so kids can spend that time getting indoctrinated with some other stupid myth/fable,

That's all it is...time/mindshare for your future's future.

Seems like a lot of cancel culture going around here...

The actual type of cancel culture that suppresses speech from the government.

I certainly don't agree with those narratives and why I said that previously the issues of slavery was taught rather simplistically. We have to be careful though is going simplistic the other way and like in many subjects there is a danger of looking at these issues diametrically.

Consider the debate we've been having on just the past two pages. A lot of has been said recently that the origins of the police are from slave patrols. Yes there are certainly ties to slave patrols and US police forces. That doesn't mean that slave patrols were the only source of US police forces because the US police system is very much based on the British Constabulary tradition and police forces that were created in the UK in the early 19th C. While many slave patrols and people who were members of slave patrols did go on to become PD that isn't the case in many cities that weren't slave states.

This issue isn't just a dry academic debate as it does bear on the current "Defund the Police" issue.

My point is European discovery of the new world belongs to Columbus and his faults do not take away from that. What has happened to Native Americans isn't on Columbus, their land being taken or their demise. It's on the whole of European migration.

Odd...for a "Hillary-Biden voter" he sure donates a lot to republican candidates. Must be like some of the people that post here as self-identified moderate Democrats...

Hmmnmmm...I wonder if he called the school and arranged a conference with the teacher and principal. I would have. Or perhaps there is some missing context like "Colin Kaepernick talks about white men as modern day slaveholders". (I know this was before the Kaepernick Netflix show, but I assume you get my point)

Repeating what I told a friend on FB about this - I get the broader meaning, but CRT is NOT being taught in K-12 schools. CRT is a graduate level theory that talks about the intersection of racism and law and the lingering effects even once the racist intent and individuals are gone.

What the confederate sympathizers are protesting about is the inclusion of minority and minority-sympathetic perspectives within the usual K-12 curriculum (basically history/social studies and literature). CRT is simply the latest right-wing boogeyman name.

Informed people should avoid playing the right wing game by adopting the same misleading terminology - all we need to say is "conservatives have no interest in having their opinions on slavery, civil right and race in general countered by other, fact-based perspectives and are thus fighting to prevent the discussion or even acknowledgement of race in school altogether."

Agreed they have taken something that has probably never been taught in K-12 and made it their next big thing to complain about .

I don’t think ol @Commodore cares about facts or context…way too nuanced.

Much easier to post garbage that makes him happy.

I'm wondering what is being taught and whether there's an official name for it.

It's obvious more perspectives are being included but what's this stuff @os Trigonun has been posting about things like music theory being trapped in colonialism or doing math systematically bring paternalistic (or something like it).

There's so much leeway for teachers to swing either way so ofc the group belonging to mediocre whites will stay mum when the classes benefit them as it's always been

Tomorrow cannot come soon enough. Popcorns and soda are ready, I will be watching the Virginia race with baited breath. Liberals, feel free to cry if Youngkin wins. There is no shame in crying, feelings are vital parts of being humans.

    I am very feel.
