Lead Atlanta to the next step this year, in the WS. of all the high profile pitchers we had in 2017, did we pick the wrong pitchers to keep? in the postseason this year, Verlander, McCullers injured. Cole ineffective (but at NY). Greinke seldom used now. unfortunately we wiffed on this one badly. Hopefully our hitters do their homework.
LMJ and Greinke were under contract. We didnt choose them over Morton and if I remember correctly Morton wanted to go closer to home or retire (before deciding to go to Atlanta). Nice thread
Greinke and Cole weren't even on the team in 2017. Of that group, they let Morton and Keuchel go. Verlander led them to the World Series in 2019. McCullers was a big part of this year's run. Morton has been to and won as many World Series as the Astros since 2017. This thread is about the same quality as all your previous threads.
People so easily forget Morton’s 2nd year here and what he was down the stretch in 2018 here (including the playoffs). Given his “injury history” (hot bbs topic), and showing signs of wear/tear, there was a lot of red flags to committing to the 2+ years guaranteed he was looking for. Just goes to show you that you can’t guarantee anything, health-wise, in anybody… guys who suffer from nagging stuff will eventually have a period of decent health. Guys who were iron men will eventually break down.
The bigger question is... did Morton pick the wrong team to go play for and not stay with the Stros when he had a chance?
Morton could have been lying and just saying this in his first return to Houston but he said he wanted to stay. Agent gave the Astros his asking price but Houston countered with a much lower price. He said that's when he realized his time with Houston was done. *now we don't know the numbers. Morton could have asked for something ridiculous
The desire to play closer to home or potentially retire had been talked about prior, so I don't think that was a lie. A team he wanted to play for (Tampa) also made him an offer that was also likely to be the best deal he was going to get. It was fairly surprising because I believe it was the second largest free agent contract they had done in terms of total dollars.

When a top player can move to different teams and get those teams to the next level, i.e. championships, there is something to be said of the leadership that player brings.. aka Brady to the Bucs.. I have a huge respect for players that are consistent and are there when you need them... All these other pitchers that don't show up due to injury or other, Greinke (Neck), Verlander (TJ), McCullers (forearm), Cole (Hamstring), are self inflicted. They need to be taking care of their bodies as this is their profession. What good are they on the injury list, yet still get paid? Morton continued to play on a broken ankle for another inning striking out batters and recording outs. Unbelievable. I don't like propping opposing players, but Morton is a true player. The others act more like primadonnas.
