Like can we seriously talk about how Sengun has not just merely held his own on defense, he’s been a legit MENACE??? With his great hands and anticipation for steals, and shot blocking translating, he has been flat out disruptive.
I’m both shocked that he is so high on defense and so low on offense. Green is actually closer to the break even point. Sengun needs way more minutes. His chemistry with Christian Wood is too good.
I think that anyone looking at scouting tape could see that Sengun possesses quick, disruptive hands. But what has been more unexpected is his ability to time up and block shots. As he gets a little more well-known around the league, players will be a little more guarded around the rim. That said, it's refreshing to see a big man like Sengun radiate a presence in the paint. Once a guard gets within 10 feet of the basket, their conversion rate drops, and they are somewhat likely to force up a contested look. When Sengun's teammates trust him more to make these stops, they can concentrate on the necessary rotations that cover up any easy passes.
Man, I know it's super early and he may still find his way but right about now it's looking bad for those who wanted Suggs over guys like Green, Mobley, Barnes, etc.
I think Sengun is playing a little too passive on offense. He needs a few subtle adjustments. 1. There was a play tonight where he backed his man all the way under the basket and then passed to a cutting guard. He needs to look for his shot if he has 1 defender on him and he is two feet from the basket. I like his passing ability, but he is forcing way too many passes. 2. The three point pump fake. People are still biting on it, but I think you'll see him be left alone even more in the future, similar to how the Mavs did in the second half. It completely stagnates the offense when they dare him to shoot like that. I prefer to see him triple threat at the free throw line. He can hit that shot, and it will only require one dribble to get to the basket if his defender contests. I am a huge fan of his game, but need to see less forced passes.
I think you'll change your mind. He is already a better defender than Jokic, if he emulates 80% of Jokic's offensive success (more shiftiness, less post) he definitely has a chance. Doncic is a bigger stretch obviously. We have the best Euro drafted in years though. Fitness and 3pt polish will make this kid an All Star caliber player.
